The Old Dog Visits: Skerries, Ireland My Mother's Place of Birth!

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

I've come with my family to see my mom's home town for the first time ever!

This is a departure from my usual posts. Just a few pics of what I've seen. It's been a very emotional experience for me to visit a place that she left more than 90 years ago!

First we flew from Lugano to Zurich. Easy peasy! Then another 2 hour flight to Dublin.

Flying over Switzerland is always very cool!

After flying to Dublin we took a bus to Skerries. My mom was born in a house by the  ocean!

We walked along the beach and looked  at one of a series of Martello Towers.

Another shot of a Martello Tower!

It was nice to see the ocean. The hearty Irish people were actually swimming in the cold water!

This is the cosy little harbour of the quaint town which is now a bedroom community of Dublin.

What About You?

  • Have you ever traveled to see where your roots are?
  • How did it make you feel?
  • Are you the child of immigrants?

I hope that you enjoyed having a look at my trip to Skerries!

Until next time,

@kus-knee (The Old Dog)

Thanks for sharing!

I had heard about the place and I'm glad to see the famous Martello Tower as well! What a beautiful area of the world...

I hope to be able to share some of my roots eventually. It is a place I have a very close bound with and have spent a lot of time growing up in the area too. So much to share in relation tot his... It is a place where I feel connection, not only to the people including family, friends and neighbourhood, but also deeply connected to the land, the vegetation and rocks, rivers and lakes. I feel in my spirit and sure of where I am going, what I can eat and where I can find the food, how to survive there as well.

I guess now that the bloods of my ancestors have been mingling with one another, I could consider myself an immigrant of Canada or Quebec, where I'm originally from, but a citizen of the world with deep roots in a few different areas of the world, mostly Quebec and the Lower St. Lawrence area.

Thanks for the opportunity to share with you on this level. Namaste :)

I'm glad you enjoyed this one too, your generosity never cease to be a kind and positive motivator. All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

Much deserved!

Nice, I was in Trois Pistoles as a young exchange student to learn French.

Trois-Pistoles is a very special area of Quebec where the people are proudly close to a French language of precision in all its verve. I'm glad you were able to get to know a bit of the area where my family is from. The traditional lands are about 30 minutes west from Trois-Pistoles.

Thanks for sharing, I had no clue and what a beautiful surprise. Namaste :)

great weather to be Ireland LOL lucky you

Yes even today has been spectacular!

here in England/Wales was awful all the time :(

Yes I think that we got lucky so far!

I am immigrant myself. Its' fun to go back to Punjab, India. I like your way of representing the emotions attached with the birthplace of your mom. Fantastic pictures!!

Funny thing. My grandparents and my great grandparents were born in India as was one of my uncles!

Wow! Which part of India? North or South?

Puna and Agra.

Taj Mahal is in Agra! Did you visited India ever?

I've never been but both my parents and my two brothers have.

Visit, you will love it (except traffic without traffic rules and pollution without limits).

@kus-knee It's so exciting to visit the homeland of ancestors. Beautiful places and great photos. And I live where my parents were born and grew up.

Nice for you to be home! My family is spread all over the planet!

Happy traveling.
Fun family.
Perfect, i love your post kus-knee
Good job.

Thanks so much!

You are welcome :)

I am from Ireland and a lot of people from around the world have roots here. A few years ago, an Aussie walked into a country bar near my home town, with just a name. My uncle was sitting at the bar. A major piece of genealogy work ensued and it turned out he was related to us. We are still in touch, and his children have visited also. His great great Grandfather left Ireland in the 1800s, never to return. It was quite an amazing story.

This got be very interested and I have tried to trace my family records back but unfortunately in Ireland there was a fire in the records office during the war of independence, which burnt all the historical church and civil records, pre 1880s. So thats pretty much as far back as it can go. Its very interesting to see where you came from, and to read about the lives your ancestors lived.

Oh wow I bet that water doesn't usually heat up too much but is especially frigid right now!!

Yes cold water but extremely warm people!

Wow, really really pretty!
I'm in the same country as my roots, so that doesn't involve a lot of traveling :P I do like to travel a lot. I actually plan to go and see Dublin with my mum sometime soon. Who knows, maybe we'll make it out to Skerries! Cool you went back to your roots. Must be a pretty special experience.

Very nice... must bring up some interesting feelings.

I still have a foot in each camp, so to speak... I was born in Denmark and lived there (mostly) till age 20; in the US since then, so I'm really a first generation immigrant. Whenever I go back to Denmark, I feel like a "visitor" for about 3-4 days before going back to feeling fully Danish... after a three week stay, the US feels almost "foreign" to me, when I return.

I can understand how you feel as you go back and forth from Denmark to the USA. I am feeling right at home here in Ireland.

Edit. Reward received.......appreciate it very much. Cheers.

Thank you @kus-knee for your kind note and reward.

However the reward is not in bleujay's wallet.......it could have been due to the spelling....apologies for the trouble. French spelling.....of the word....bleu.....in the online moniker of bleujay.

All the best to you. Cheers.

Fixed! I even studied french in High School and was an exchange student.... oops! Oh well another member got a gift too!
