Come Along [6] - Baby Elephants at the Jungle Sanctuary

Elephants are such majestic giants. In the past I had my first encounter with an elephant at a Thailand animal show as a child. I still remember being picked up and held up high by its trunk just laughing my ears off. I used to think about how great to ride on the back of an elephant parading around the jungle just like in the movies. Now learning about how damaging this is to them, I’m glad there are other ways that we can enjoy our time with these amazing creatures that doesn’t hurt them.

In Chiang Mai there are many companies offering a full day or half day elephant experience. We chose the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. Instead of riding on their backs your spend this time taking care and playing with them. In the morning a car came to pick us up where we were transported to the hillsides near the city. Upon arrival we put on our caretaker outfits and sat down to learn about elephants.

So a lot of the elephants in the sanctuary were from nearby villages. The owners loved their elephants but they would get too big and start eating and destroying the fields, forcing them to either have to sell them to companies to work in logging, tourist enjoyment or be put down. Unlike horses elephant’s backs are curved and not designed for riding. Seven hours a day or carrying hundreds of pounds of weight on their back and walking around all week, many of the elephants would be injured or and have their backs broken and eventually be put down. It’s a sad fate and nothing like what we imagine. When the elephant sanctuaries started gaining popularity it was great for the owners because now they know their elephants would be taken care of and have a good life.

After learning about the elephants we were given some corn to feed them. Lucky for us there was a 11 day old baby elephant prancing around! For the adults they can eat the corn with the husk whole but babies need to have the husk peeled off. It was so cute running around between the moms legs popping out to approach us and get some food. I was peeling as fast as I could to feed him while he was reaching out his trunk to the corn in my hands.

Once feeding was done it was time for a bath. A mud bath actually. We headed down to a mud pool and the elephants started coating themselves in mud one by one. I think we should have had a bath before the meal because a lot took this opportunity to take a poop in the mud with us in it. Good thing we headed to the river after this to rinse all the “mud” off. It was really fun splashing the elephants with water and watching them roll around.

Then it was time for us to get cleaned up under the showers they have provided and we refueled with a lunch. For our going away present we received these small cute side bags that I ended up using for most of my trip! The whole experience was very relaxing and enjoyable. I’m glad we were able to have this elephant experience. I highly recommend it. Be sure to add this to your list if you’re in Thailand for some unforgettable memories.

Thanks for Coming Along!
See you again in Pt 7!

Awesome thanks steemit !! ❤️

"instead of riding on their back, we were taking care and playing with them" : THIS, I LOVE ! Respect the elephant as sensitive, intelligent being as they REALLY are, that is so right ! thank you for this post, really, I mean it !

Yea it was such a great experience ! I'm really happy that more people are learning about it and finding ways to enjoy time with animals where they can be happy too 😊

@lalilands, thanks for sharing about your time with the elephants. It is fun to watch you play with them instead of just riding them.

My wife and I were able to watch an elephant show in Chang Mai many years ago. Thailand is just a beautiful country and we would love to visit again some day.

Thanks @sumatranate. I'm glad they have this available for everyone to enjoy! The elephants are so smart it's amazing 😊

Thanks so much for sharing this experience!

These photos are great. I especially enjoyed seeing the baby elephant. I imagine it was pretty fun to be able to exist alongside the animals like this for a few hours. The mud bath seems quite entertaining.

I grew up on a cattle farm, so I got used to feeding corn to cows. I think it would be fun to feed corn to the elephants, too.

Perhaps someday I'll get to experience something like this, but for now, thank you for sharing your experiences so I can live vicariously! haha

Wow Ethan! You must have so much experience with animals. It's so fun watch the elephants eat and grab things with their trunks. It's like an arm! Haha yea they seem to really enjoy themselves in the mud and water it's so cute how playful they are. I hope you get to experience it someday!

I only have experience with cows and chickens. haha

The elephants do sound really fun, though. I'm glad you shared this, and thank you for your response! I'll be looking forward to more of your blogs!

Oh man that is so cool. You got to literally hang out with the elephants. I've always thought elephants are such amazing animals. I've seen them in a zoo, but nothing like what you got to do here. Were the elephants scary at all or were they all nice and calm?

Omg derek! It's the best they were so calm and gentle it was such a great experience to see them in their "nature" environment

OMG this is such an amazing post! I love elephants and I'm definitely doing this activity on my trip to Thailand. It was so much fun reading your experience and looking at the fun pictures!

Yes you must!! If you love elephants it's going to be a little paradise for you to be able to spend so much time with them! A whole day just playing with them lol

The baby elephant is cute 😊
Great that these elephants are being treated well.

It was so adorable!!!! It would climb on top of the care takers and sit on them lol. Definitly can't do that when it grows bigger

I did an elephant ride years ago before I even thought about it. In more recent years I've felt so guilty about it. :(

Awee it's ok you didn't know! At least it's getting more known so there are more sanctuaries now. Im glad I found out as well, we just got to spread the info so more people know ❤️

Wow,loved all the pictures and the elephant babies are really cute :)

So cute right !?? So lucky to see a baby one. Thanks for stopping by my blog !

Such an amazing experience!! If I am ever in Thailand I will for sure go there! Great post!

Yes you definitely must, it was so memorable. I can't believe how safe you feel around these gentle giants. it's really great! Thanks for reading <3

That must have been soooo awesome! Elephants are such majestic animals.. now im gonna have to check out some of ur other articles 😉 thanks for sharing. Take care.

Right!? Such a unique animal and all smart. I'm so amazed at how versatile their trunks are ! Thanks for reading my post!

Wow, beautiful, @lalilands. I love elephants! Maybe one of these days I'll visit a place like this 😁

That's crazy that you can get so close. So cool. The closest we have come is from a distance at the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park. From what I understand, they are incredible facilities. But only trainers can get close. :)
