Of all the places I have visited in the United States, San Francisco has been my favorite. I have been there three times and I can't wait to go back. The scenery here is unreal. So many attractions. And great places to eat.
When I travel, I really don't like having to rent a car. There are a few places you will need a car to see but you can also make it without one if you plan on just staying in the city. From the airport you can catch the BART and it will take you downtown. There's also Muni buses and cable cars. You can also walk of course but it is quiet the workout. The uneven streets can get brutal after a while.
A couple of places that you will need a car to get to is the Muir Woods and Battery Spencer. Muir Woods is home to the redwood trees. Well worth the $10 entry fee. Battery Spencer is where to go to get the best photos and view of the Golden Gate bridge.
However, if you don't want to do any driving there is plenty of things to do in the city. I have gone to see the San Francisco Giants play each time I have visited. In my opinion, AT&T Park is the best ballpark to watch a game. Alcatraz Island might be the most popular attraction in San Francisco. I went there the first time I visited. It's a cool place to see but probably not something you would need to do more than once. There's a boat from Fisherman's Wharf that will take you there and back. The boat ride itself is fun too.
Other notable attractions include Colt Tower, the Bay Bridge, China Town, Ghirardelli Factory and the Golden Gate Park. I can't say I would recommend visiting the Golden Gate Park. It was a bit of a letdown for me. Nothing like Central Park in New York.
