Laura and Em's Big Adventure

Hi everyone!

I am excited to be writing my first post. I have a beautiful daughter called Emily and we are starting our travels around this massive country of ours (Australia) very soon.

It was a strange path that brought us to this point but despite all of the ups and the downs, everything happens for a reason. Or so they say anyway. I am not sure who "they" are yet but it seems to be a positive way to think about life.

The biggest challenge I had to overcome in preparing for the trip was to answer this question:
"How do I make money while travelling?" As I will be travelling with a 6 year old, most of the conventional ways (fruit picking, bar work, other seasonal work, etc) were out so I had to think outside of the box. The things that I thought we could do together included things like babysitting and nanny jobs. These would be good but would still be hard if we wanted a lot of flexibility and to move around a lot. It would be hard to get our name out there if we were constantly moving around.

Then I thought about the journey we had been on for the last 4-5 years. I thought that maybe people would be inspired or motivated to hear about what we have overcome to achieve what we had in the last 4-5 years despite all of the hurdles we had faced. After all, if we had not faced some of those hurdles, we would not have this opportunity now to travel around our beautiful country. So, the idea of Eating an Elephant (www.eatinganelephant.net.au) was born. It is still in the start up phase but I am hoping it will allow me to earn money while we travel, while hopefully helping and motivating people along the way.

My next task in preparing for the journey is to find a suitable caravan and towing vehicle. They have to be woman and kid-friendly and make a long (possibly years) travel journey comfortable!

Stay tuned for my post on choosing a caravan and towing vehicle.
