Roadtrippin in Greece: The Peloponnese (part 3)

in travel •  7 years ago

Hello Steemian friends !

Today we are back with our third exciting adventure in the Peloponnese wonders! In our previous posts, we told you about our unforgettable experiences in Elafonisos (that eye-boggling beach – remember?), and Polilimnio (the mind-blowing waterfalls – ring a bell?).

Today we are back with the hidden gem of

Feneos

– a true gem hidden in the midst of the Peloponnese mountains that even most Greeks don’t know about ;) !!! We drove through the beautiful area of Feneos, located in the midlands of Peloponnesus, and camped at the breathtaking «Doxa lake» for a night, enjoying good food and the company of friendly people along the way.

The name «Doxa lake», that translates to ‘glorious lake’, goes some way to describe just how MAGNIFICENT this lake is. And if you happen to find yourself in this area on the 11th of July, make sure to take part in the triathlon – a 5km run, 750m swim, and 21km bike ride combo!

Do you have what it takes?

We took this breathtaking photo from the monastery of «Agios Giorgos (St George)», just a short hike up from the lake’s shorelines, which we embarked on after a skinny-dip in the lake’s crystal waters to stay cool. Here we lit a candle and enjoyed the view of the mountains and lake with a taste of their wonderful home-made "triadafilo", which is desert made from roses.

Just a 5min drive from «Doxa lake» we came across the area’s traditional village. Here we enjoyed high quality organic meat over a chat with the owner Mrs Panagiota and her lovely family. After devouring this freshly cooked meal, we made our way over to ‘Jimmy’s’ – a small local café bar located in the village’s ‘platia’ (main square). We were offered lots of Raki - a traditional Turkish drink that comes highly recommended to loosen you up – and then participated in a local football game with the owner’s son, 5-year-old Sotiris, who is a must-meet for every fan of the sport!

The next morning, following our peaceful and quiet night’s rest by the lake, we returned to ‘Jimmy’s’ for a breakfast that cured our Raki-hangovers – fresh home grown tomatoes in oil accompanied by eggs laid by the chickens in Jimmy’s garden.

(Although we are campers at heart and so chose to camp by the lake rather than rent a room, we highly recommend Jimmy’s wonderful apartments for only 20euro a night for a more luxurious stay at Feneos!)

We sadly said goodbye to our new friends as we had to put an end to our Peloponnesian adventures. A good 2 hour road trip back to Athens, where our journey ended only for a new one to begin soon...
