Another Day in Guatapé, Colombia: We Climb La Piedra!

in travel •  7 years ago

Hola Steemians!

I promise when I return to the States there will be more thoughtful commentary, more videos, and more news of The Agoric Challenge, which myself and the @agoric.systems crew are very much still working on...

But for now I give you, more simple tales of adventure from Colombia... Because well, I am here with the incomparable @wolfcat, and this is what's happening. ;)

Today we climbed this huge rock in Guatapé

Ok, truth be told we didn't climb all the way to the top, just the first pitch of one particular route, but nevertheless it was an epic climb. We we're assisted in our endeavor by two local climbers who have a climbing and adventure company based in Guatapé, right at the base.

This huge rock that rises up seemingly from nowhere is pretty much a massive slab of granite, so there aren't a lot of hand or footholds, you have to make due with little holds here and there, and... friction. Thank heavens for a good pair of climbing shoes!

Here's base camp

And away she goes!

When you get to the top of the pitch there's a hammock to lay in!

It was great to have a hammock at the top because at that point in the climb, I for one was pretty much exhausted and thirsty as can be. The only tricky part is getting into the darn thing!

Of course I had a go at the wall too!

Most of the good photos of me are on @wolfcat's phone. Funny how that works. ;)

Exhausted from the day's efforts, we headed back to town. There was dinner to be had, and a long walk back to the farm.

We just made some effort to finish our Spanish homework, and now it's time to drift off to sleep.

Dulce sueños Steemians!
Until next time ...

Peace and @lovejoy + @wolfcat

I can't imagine how sweaty you were laying in that hammock! Looks like a grand old time.

Haha :) yeah... Pretty sweaty and exhausted! I think rappelling down was my favorite part.

You have lots of courage. I would be afraid to climb that rock as it looks very slippery.

Btw, great photos.

Thanks. I was encouraged by the skills of the two guys who were belaying us. They did an excellent job. It was definitely pretty slippery, but you never know until you try. :)

That looks like big fun! The rock quality looks extremely good. Do you know how routes are protected in general?

Thank you for sharing this amazing adventure! :-)

I don't know much about how the routes are protected... The guys that took us up there have recently formed a company which is devoted to climbing and also preservation of the land along with facilitating adventure sports and such. They are on Facebook currently, which I am not, so I have to wait until @wolfcat gets in touch with them to tell you more about who they are and what they do. The rock is privately owned apparently, by some local family.

Thanks for the resteem! I'll check out @climbing-trail now!

Wow great! For me it was hard enough to climb up te stairs :D
