Day Trip to Shelter Island, NY

It's always nice to be able to get away from the hectic city life. My husband and I decided to take a road trip to Shelter Island which is a town and an island situated at the eastern end of Long Island, NY. Shelter Island is accessible only by ferry. It is a quick eight minute ride.

We didn't have any specific plans and since it was our first time here, we decided to do a quick drive around the island. We saw a few beaches and we also drove past a preserve where you can hike through trails. Since we were not prepared for hiking we decided we would park the car and explore the town. While we were walking, we noticed that the streets had no sidewalks!

I guess you don't really need them when there are not that many cars on the road. This town is super charming and low key. During our exploration we came across a sign that said fresh oysters for sale. Since my husband is a huge fan of oysters we decided to go in and check it out. Where else could you find a business operated out of a home garage?

We decided to buy a dozen oysters and we walked across the street to the local brewery. It was a no frills local hang out. We ordered a Belgian style beer made with local Acacia honey and lemon verbena grown from the owner's garden.

Nothing better than fresh oysters and an icy beer for a light snack. Shelter Island is super charming and it has a small town vibe. It's fun to spend a day here unwinding and taking in the beautiful scenery. Ah, pure bliss!

Sounds like you guys had fun. Enjoyed reading and looking at the pictures. Small towns by water are the best!

They sure are! I just love the chill vibe of small towns. Thank you for your comment @pia-ps.

lovely photography!

Thanks so much @fatimaah.

I use a canon is that a good camera to use?

I'm definitely not a camera expert but my friends that own one have nothing but positive things to say about it. Thanks @theguys.

It appears to be a good travel idea and pictures are beautiful ! That place seems to be quite far from the high buildings and the noisy roads of New york.

It sure is. It's so low key, perfect for unwinding. Thank you @mysqlthrashmetal.

Adding this to my bucket list! We live in NJ and this would be a fun trip. I love oysters, the ocean, and beer! How hard is it to shuck your own oysters? Thanks for sharing!!!!

It's not too hard you just have to be careful you don't stab yourself with the knife. Actually Chris (the oyster man) will demo how to open an oyster. He has a really neat method. Bring lots of kitchen towels from your house because it will be messy. We were lucky we had one in the car. Also behind the brewery there is a take out place called Maria's kitchen. They make really tasty Mexican food. I look forward to seeing pictures from your trip. Thank you@popsoz.

The place is really charming as I can see from your pics! It's so beautiful and nice. Fresh oysters are big and ready to eat!

It's always nice to get away even if it's just for a day! Thank you @mayasiam. I can't wait to see what you will be cooking next.

It looks so peaceful there!! Love your pictures too!

It was so laid back, just what I needed. Thank you@alansthoughs.
