Day 1 - Bolivia Trip - Salar de Uyuni

in travel •  5 years ago

At the end of July I went with two good friends from Mexico and Argentina through the Bolivian salt desert ‘Salar de Uyuni’.

With a night bus we went from the capital La Paz to Uyuni. We had already booked our tour in advance, but you have the possibility to book your tour with an agency there. This should even be cheaper than booking the trip on the internet. Thus we waited in a hostel until our guide would pick us up with a 4x4 jeep. After a refreshment and a hot shower, it started for us! We drove from the city and visited directly an old railway cemetery. These trains and locomotives are partly one hundred years long discarded and served for the transport of salt between Bolivia and Chile.
Now they are available to the tourists for climbing and taking pictures. With the further journey the landscape changed slowly. The salt landscape is simply admirable!

We stop briefly in the village of Colchani to buy souvenirs of the Salar. Then we went on to the first salt hotel of the world "Playa Blanca", where we had lunch. Because of the travel time there was only one place with water on our way. The best travel time with the water reflection is during January until April. But also with the contrast between the with salt and the blue sky you can take great and funny photos. In the afternoon we visited Incahuasi, which is an island with big cacti and rock formations in the middle of the salt desert. We had an hour to explore the top of the hill and had a fantastic view from above. In any case a must-see on this tour!

Afterwards we went on through the salt desert. We stopped to marvel at the sunset and here it becomes clear again - how beautiful mother nature is!

We went on to San Juan, a small village where we would spend the night. Here we strengthened ourselves with dinner and were able to recharge our batteries as well as our electronic devices. The sleeping bag with a surcharge of 10$ was a good choice in the cold. The three of us were sleeping like babies until the alarm clock rang again at 6 o'clock in the morning. In the next article we will continue our journey, stay tuned!!
