CHASED BY TORNADOS IN MINNESOTA

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

When you're driving from Calgary (Alberta) to Minneapolis, you pass through two states (North Dakota and Montana) before reaching Minnesota.

As gasoline is more expensive in Canada than in the states, we chose to drive more on the American soil than going through Saskatchewan.

Driving through North Dakota is an unique experience. You have to try it!

The scenery is so surreal, like nothing I have seen before.

Some areas are hilly and then is all flat!

Plus the fact that you can drive for close to 300 miles without seeing a city, a village or a gas station can be scary. Especially if you are travelling with a 3-year-old on the back seat of your vehicle!

Last summer when I took this trip, I could not help asking myself what would happen if I would had an accident.

DSC_6238.JPG

Or what if I would have ran out of gas?

DSC_6245.JPG

We would have been stuck in the middle of nowhere for a long time, hoping that someone would come to our rescue!

DSC_6247.jpg

There were no cars, no trucks, nothing passing on the highway for hundreds of miles.

Did I mention that the phone or GPS reception was on and off?

Having the road to our self seemed great in the beginning but when I got a flat tire I got somehow worried.

DSC_6251.JPG

Not to mention that we got a storm behind us the whole time we were on the road.

Closer we got to Minnesota, darker it got outside.

When he finally reached Minnesota, our phones picked up the signal and started to beep.

We were receiving emergency text messages sent by the government.

The message you can see in the image above was meant to inform us about the tornado alert that was on at the time. That did not prevent us from admiring the landscape and the windmills in the distance. North Dakota has a lot of windmills!

Plus where were we going to go? We were still close to 120 miles away form our final destination for the day.

There was no place to take shelter anywhere around us! Only flat fields, nothing else.

Thus we continued to drive despite the fact that it had started to rain and the sky was getting darker by the minute.

As soon as we arrived at my aunt's house, there was a moment of silence, followed instantly by crazy winds and heavy heavy rain. We just had the time to come out of the car and rush inside the house before we saw things flying through the air. I was tempted to stay close by the door or window and take more photos, hoping I 'd get a great snapshot, but my family convinced me otherwise. Therefore, safety came first.

The following morning I saw a photo of the tornado that had passed by the previous day. Someone had emailed to one of the local newspapers and then it was all over the news.

We also found out that there was a strong cyclic supercell which had created multiple tornados moving across the state. Apparently we managed to drive between 4 or 5 tornadoes. The tornado that we felt the previous day was rated EF-2 with peak winds of 125 mph which caused a lot of damage in the Nicolett area.

To be honest, until that day I did not even know that there were tornados in Minnesota. It wasn't the first tornado I had witnessed or survived, but it was a memorable experience.

What about you? What memorable experiences you had while being on the road?

A fun experience for you. It makes a good story.

Thanks! I thought others might enjoy reading about it.

A long way @lymepoet 👍

Yes, it was a long trip.

I love the landscapes of Minnesota, I hope someday to know that place

But without tornadoes, haha greetings

I agree. No more tornados!

Good my post

That is so scary..I'm glad that nothing bad happened. Nature is really dangerous sometimes..

True, but there's so much beauty in it. Those black clouds were spectacular. ;0)

Surreal is such a good word to describe that scenery what an amazing drive that must have been

glad you made it safely to your aunts

Thanks! Fun adventures on the road ;0)

Oh what an adventure!! I have never encountered a tornado!!

This was our 4th tornado and hopefully the last one. ;0)

Oh wow, I hope so too!!

wow that was a close call, very beautiful photos. I have never travelled such a distance with no other people around, I find it appealing really xx

It was appealing to me as well. Just that I would have been a bit more relaxed if I had an extra can of gas with me. ;0)

I am sure that you are glad that your adventure was over, especially since you were traveling with a youngster. There are several places in the US that you have to watch out for no gas stations.

I live in Missouri. We are still in tornado season. Glad to hear that you made it safe without any major weather complications.

Tornado season? Oh, boy! I imagine that you're prepared just like in Florida with wind resistant roofing and shutters?

Your boy's curiosity is a testament to the adults around him.

Why?

Fear is mostly a learned behavior.

Excellent article.

Namaste, JaiChai

I could have not explained it better. Thank you!

Holy swirling wings @lymepoet! Thrilled you guys are ok - especially since you were able to capture some incredible pics for all of Steemians!

There is some spectacular geography out in those parts. And who doesn't love a good storm - provided it doesn't catch you!!

Thansk again for a mesmerizing post! I'll be following for more!

Thanks! I always loved storms. This was not that bad though ;0))

What a story, I can imagine driving so far in pretty much complete wilderness has to be unnerving - anything happening and with no cell signal you are flat out on your own.

Lucky you made it just before the storm and could get inside and be safe, quite a journey - how did your boy take it all?

He was not scared at all. He was curious and asking a lot of questions. At one moment he asked if we will go to Kansas that evening, which did not make sense to me. Then he explained to us that he thought we would fly like Dorothy and Toto to Kansas. ;0)

What a landscape! And I love those clouds. I really want to see a Tornado one day, but on the other hand...Probably better not. I guess I couldn´t move, catched between fear and amazement. Thank you for this post!

The adrenaline will kick in and you'll be able to move. ;0)

A sight that makes the eyes stunned, really beautiful

Glad you enjoyed seeing the photos above.

Yes. I so happy

Awesome roadtrip. Besides the storm (or even with it), that looks like some sort of American Dream or at least the idea that some can have of it.
