Recognizing a Passion

Jasmien Lewis, an established professional with multiple degrees, started her own travel agency 5 years ago. Back then, she was a full-time college student who simultaneously worked a full-time job. She often found that while she was doing her homework late at night, she would have one tab open on her research and another open on her next travel itinerary. Recognizing her passion, she began to form an idea for a business. That idea, with the addition of hard work and a ton of research, would eventually become Travel Life Services, LLC.

Early Influences

As a child, Jasmien recounts her mother was “always on the go.” Being a single parent, her mother had no choice but to take Jasmien with her everywhere she went. Her mother noticed Jasmien’s developing interest in travel and went to great lengths to foster it, even on a limited budget. Jasmien would come home from school excited about some new place, and her mom would immediately start planning the next trip. She took young Jasmien to Philadelphia, New York, and other places within driving distance of her native Cleveland, Ohio. Jasmien says, “She couldn’t afford to get us both plane tickets, so she just drove.” Mom was determined to give her daughter a wealth of experience – driving distance even included the 16 hour annual drive to Orlando, Florida to visit Disney World. In her junior year of high school, mom encouraged Jasmien to take the opportunity to study abroad in the Netherlands for an entire year. While she would have preferred France originally, by the time her year of exploring the EU was finished she said, “I couldn’t get enough of Europe.”
These early travel experiences shaped Jasmien’s philosophy that “travel is a lifestyle.” Shortly after graduating high school, she planned a trip to Miami with a close friend. After scouring the Internet, Jasmien was able to find the deal of the century – flight and lodging for less than $400! While there, she even managed to find deals on free admission to popular nightclubs along with complimentary beverages. This trip was just the first in a long line of exciting travel experiences, including her destination wedding in October of 2017. When asked how she finds such great deals, she responds, “I just find them!”

Sage Advice

While studying for a Master’s in Health Business Administration, she received a piece of advice that would turn out to change the course of her life. She had always wanted to be her own boss and have her own business, but she didn’t know what that business would be. A professor told her, “take what you’re good at and what you’re passionate about and merge them.” Many long nights later, while doing homework on one tab and searching for travel opportunities on the next, “it clicked.” She finally realized that travel was her true passion and her talent was finding good deals. Her mom always being a prime influence, Jasmien went to her first with the new business idea.

Mom loved it! Jasmien set out to start her very own travel agency. In the beginning, she didn’t know anything at all about how to start a business, let alone a travel agency, but with perseverance, the administrative skills learned while earning her Master’s, and a little bit of good luck, she was able to establish Travel Life Services in 2014. In the beginning, Jasmien and her husband Aaron handled all the clients, bookings, and administrative tasks in between each working full time jobs. As word-of-mouth advertising spread and the phone calls kept coming in, Jasmien found she needed to expand and brought in several other agents to assist with booking trips for their new clients.

Looking Forward

Now at the 5 year mark, and having established a successful business, Jasmien has decided it’s time to focus on Travel Life Services, LLC full time. She has brought in a marketing and branding team to help the company reach its full potential. In the 5 years of operating Travel Life Services, LLC, Jasmien feels the business has reached the “Established” level, and with the bare minimum of paid advertising. Her next goal is for her business to reach the “Profound” level and become a household name. While the dream of owning her own business has always appealed to her, she says, “I want to expand for the agents working under me.” She recognizes that their success is also her success and says, “I want to leave a legacy. I don’t want to live in the same lifestyle I grew up in.”

Jasmien is optimistic about the future of her travel agency. She says, “many people don’t trust the Internet or they simply want the convenience of having someone else do it. We want it faster. We want time. Travel agents free up your time. Agents make the experience less daunting.” Her vision for Travel Life Services, LLC is to provide a luxurious, customized experience to fit any budget. Travel is a lifestyle after all, and everyone deserves the opportunity to travel. While she admits that “travel takes some juggling,” her advice is “don’t let fear rule you.” Take the trip, start the business, get the degree – this is simply a way of life for Jasmien Lewis.

Thank you. She's got big plans and the determination to see them through. It's pretty impressive.

And no problem. I couldn't stand by and watch them all gang up on you. :-)

She is an inspiring lady for sure!

You have a mighty fine gif arsenal, enough to take down any gang. It was like being in 300, the many vs the few. And we stood strong, defiant, victorious 💪

I have a secret.

I'm descended from Spartans.

Here's the genealogy: my father was a United States Marine. He tells me Marines are direct descendants of Vikings, who in turn, are directly descended from Spartans.

I really am Sparta.

This is Sparta. I'm glad you to have by my side in any battle.

Hopefully we can get in touch and work something out

That would be great. The best way to get in touch with Jasmien is going to be through the link to her website at the bottom of the post. :-)

what a nice expose you did for this accomplished young woman!! It is best if we can combine passion and skill to make a living!

Thank you! Yes, I couldn't agree more! She's certainly doing it right. :-)

Sometimes we do not expect what is in store for us. Our course in life can change in any time. It is inspiring seeing her follow her passion and succeed. She has accomplished much in those five years which makes me think what I have accomplished in the past five years. Truly inspiring story.

She is a powerhouse indeed! She said at one point that she, "can't function with free time." I've always admired people who have that kind of nonstop drive.

Great write up @mattifer. It sounds like a success story to me. Maybe I crack on with my crypto assistance business! It could be me in 5 years? Gaz

I think that's a good plan! But you'll have an advantage. You'll be a crypto pioneer, first in your field!

I like the sound of that. 😉

She is living her passion! Good for her, I think that is so cool. Very inspirational. Thanks for sharing @mattifer!

That's the only way to really live! I'm so happy for her and the example she sets for others. :-)

What an inspiring story! "Do what you love and you will do it well" :-)

I used to be a kind of restless character myself and was always on the go... that was before the internet and I usually just drove all over Europe by car. When I lived in the US, I flew a lot, but avoid it now, whenever possible.

But I agree, that having a professional help with the planing, makes traveling a lot more convenient.

I wish we could embrace a culture where 'Do what you love' was more important than 'Do what is profitable...' but until then, we'll just have to make doing what we love profitable. :-)

Any particular reason you avoid flying typically?

make doing what we love profitable that's great! I think it usually turns out that way eventually, just have to hang in there long enough. But passion can take you a long way.

I had to fly so much, that I just came to hate it. Plus, now I live 2 hours away from the nearest big airport and all things considered it makes no sense to me within a certain radius where I like to go... which is now defined by my motorcycle ;-)

Motorcycle rides are the best. :-) Have you done any cross country trips on one? I don't know if I'd enjoy that, but I do love going for a ride on a summer day.
