A natural beauty and a personal favorite, Nafplio is seaport town in the Peloponnese, in Greece. After the lordship of 'Argos and Nauplia', to the Fourth Crusade, the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire, it became the capital of the First Hellenic Republic and of the Kingdom of Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834.
Interesting fact about the city's name: It kept changing names within the years [among others: Nauplia and Anaplion] when, in the late Middle Ages, under the Venetians, the town was known in Italian as Napoli di Romania, after the medieval usage of "Romania" to refer to the lands of the Byzantine Empire (!!!), and to distinguish it from Napoli (Naples) in Italy. Napoli, besides a name, also means 'new city', coming from the Greek 'Neapoli'. The name in Turkish also meant 'new city'.
Enjoy the tour and don't forget to smile!
Have a great day fellow Steemians!
This is the super cute Bourtzi, a water castle constructed in 1473 by the Venetiansto protect the city from pirates and invaders from the sea. Until 1865 it served as a fortress. It was then transformed into residence of the executioners of convicts from the castle of Palamidi. From 1930 to 1970, it served as a hotel. Since then, it is mainly a tourist attraction hosting occasionally parts of the Summer Music Festival. It was recently renovated.
Syntagma (Constitution) Square - the main town square, with lots of cafés, banks, shops, a museum and a former mosque converted to a cinema theater (photo below)

Thank you ! :) It's beautiful there! I've never been to Icaria no :/ I think I'm a shameful Greek - haven't been in many of our islands to be honest... :( I have family from Corfu and lived in Crete, and then the essentials: Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Andros, Tinos, Syros and some close to Athens and that's that... And you've been to Icaria plenty of times...shame on me haha!!! :D

I was there about 8 years ago and though I don't remember the exact details I remember hiking up to a fort that overlooked the whole town. It was very lovely from up there. You should have checked it out while you were there.

Yes, you went up to Palamidi fortress, 999 stairs up! It's pretty neat, isn't? I've been to Nafplio plenty of times, because of family and because it is close to Athens ;) Up there I went with a school excursion though, it was exhausting haha!
