The city was possibly built in 312 BC and became the capital of the Arab Nabataeans. It is not only known as an emblem of Jordan, but also it is a popular tourist place. The Nabataeans, being nomadic Arabs, set up Petra as a giant business hub as this place was very close to regional trade pathways. Their excellent water collecting techniques and ability in making structures into solid rocks by carving it made them popular all over the world. There is a canyon within the mountain range where Petra is located on the descent of Jebel al-Madhbah. It creates the giant valley known as the eastern side of Arabah, which extends from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. It is opted as a UNESCO World Heritage place since 1985. The city was discovered by Swiss traveler Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Otherwise It was known as the “Lost City” and not familiar to the Western countries till 1812.
