Cliff Falls, Kanaka Creek (Maple Ridge) - Photos

in travel •  6 years ago  (edited)

Last week we planned to hit two waterfalls that were short hikes, this was to be the longer one at 2.4 miles and the other shorter one at just .5 miles. As I was doing the research to figure out more info about the hikes, I ran across news articles from just a week previous about a woman dying at the falls! I did not read all of the details but they made it clear she went over the fence, which of course we always do and urged people to not make her same mistake. So with this news handy, we still made our way to the falls and it was our first stop.

Once we got there and read the map at the park, we were surprised to find that the hike was only about .4 miles to falls, making our instructions way off and making for two easy hikes. Which is nice, but we do like to work for the beauty and get a little sweat going in our hikes and this prevented us from accomplishing it on this day. After the short hike, we made our way across the bridge and down to the falls, but you could not really see them without going over the fence where the woman likely died. So of course we jumped over the small wooden fence and made out way closer to the falls.

I assume that the woman went down to the actual rocks and by looking at the rocks, they were slick, just like the ones I fell down and hurt myself on and could have easily died as well. So we stayed up on the dirt and got the photos you see below. Hailey did attempt to close one time and I yelled out out fear for her to stop, but it was fine other than. She is always pushing the limits, scaring me in the process. lol

These falls were much smaller (minus the big finish you see in about the 5th photo, which we had to climb over another fence ot get to), but they had so much amazing erosion going on, making it one of the more interesting and complex falls. An easy hike and must see if looking for more simple adventures!
