At the ADO Bus terminal, I got a warm and friendly text from Khalil, my Tulum Airbnb host asking how I was getting to town. After letting him know I would be leaving on the 1pm bus from Playa Del Carmen, he notified me that he will pick me up from the ADO station. I said “How sweet..thank you.” He said “It’s the least I could do, your my guest.”

That was the start of my journey to a Tulum. About an hour bus ride south of Playa Del Carmen is the tranquilo town of Tulum also know in Mexico as the City of the Moon.

I had already decided to rent a bike while I was in town and my ride home with Khalil confirmed that would probably be a good idea.

This was a new model. Trust me, pay the extra 30 pesos per day

The vibe of the area reminded me of Sayulita, Mexico and Montezuma, Costa Rica. About the size of the 2 towns combined with a chic hippie vibe.

Riding out to the beach I found the waters calming yet wild and unpredictable at the same time.

I found a place to enjoy a couple of fish tacos cool off before leaving the beach.

I found out a few interesting things about the Peninsula. For the bird lovers, there is a huge bird life on the Yucatan peninsula which includes the States of Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo where I am. Out of the 10,500 species of birds found in the world 565 species live temporarily or permanently in this region.
Sorry no bird picks😔

Awakened by a bump in the early hours of the morning,
about 5 minutes later was the best down pour. It lasted for about 15 minutes. Apparently, we are still in rainy season on this side of the country. So light showers were a part of most of my stay in Tulum along with hot humid afternoons.

As a recommendation from Khalil, I tried

I waited til my last day to visit the ruins. I decided to go later than sooner and lost most of the daylight. I didn’t get to tour the whole site with shops, bars and trains included but I was still happy I went. This one site alone was worth the bike ride in the rain.

Tulum was a sweet spot to rest a few days on my way down the coast. Though I did not have the quiet serene Airbnb experience I expected by the reviews, the place was cute and equipped with blender and hair dryer. Not common in Mexico.

Everything that came out of the kitchen looked delish. I had a long bus ride ahead of me and from all the biking and walking, I wanted a big
breakfast...
