DTube Episode 11 #colourfulphotography Steemit Photography Challenge - Graffiti Hunting in Bushwick Brooklyn and Astoria Queens, New York City

in travel •  6 years ago

It is with great pleasure that I can finally share with you episode 11! In it I’ll be taking you to Astoria Queens and Bushwick Brooklyn on a hunt to shoot colorful graffiti murals.

New York City graffiti is very near and dear to my heart - for several reasons. It’s something that I grew up with around me and as I got older I found it an awesome subject to photograph. I even had the #1 ranked graffiti blog according to Google at one time. But I had to let the site go as I had other more pressing things to do and it was a lot of work to keep up.

I still go out shooting graffiti once in a while in New York City and one of those neighborhoods I frequent is Bushwick in Brooklyn.

Earlier this spring I went (after not having gone in about 2 years) and holy cow! 🤯 It’s another world there!

It blows my mind as in little as 10 years ago you couldn’t pay people to move there and now it’s a mixture of the village and Williamsburg Brooklyn - all in one place (New Yorkers know what I’m talking about). I’m still taken aback when I see caucasian people not only walking around but taking residence and opening up businesses.

It’s a good and bad thing as inevitably the artists and low income people that used to live there will be priced out (I give it 5 years). But that’s how gentrification goes and I lament the fact that it’s happening again right before my eyes.

Another thing that blows my mind is how cryptocurrency has a presence there. Take a look at what @sndbox is doing. According to one of their recent posts:

“100 Bogart is at the center of it all. This multi-use building complex sits in the heart of Bushwick and is crafting some major influence over the blockchain landscape in New York City. The workspace is host to dozens of companies and startups related to blockchain, including @sndbox and The Crypto Renaissance exhibition.”

If you’re ever in New York City I suggest you bring your camera and take a trip there. You can Google The Bushwick Collective and it will put you in the right area.

But don’t go at night. Not that’s Chicago levels of dangerous - I just wouldn’t recommend it. As an anecdote - a few years ago there was a gallery art opening and people were getting robed on the way out.

Oh and if you plan on taking the subway there - do so before 2019 as the L train is shutting down for 15 months which has caused the rent prices to go down.

As a final note I’d like to shout out @colossus39 and @hhtb as I know they’ll dig this post!

Yooo! This was such an amazing video, I really loved how you shot and edited it and those pieces are dope! Crazy how neighborhoods change and great you could bring your nephew with you and share the history about the writers and the hood. Thanks for the learnings! I recently did a recap of Toronto's Graffiti Alley if you wanna check it out. I didn't do it justice with the color correction, as I'm not very good with the edits but peep it! https://steemit.com/dtube/@vandigital/haltcx6g

That was dope! I wish there were more legit spots like this in the world. Gave you a follow here and on YouTube. Keep in touch. 👊🏻
