In my third instalment of the Throwback Thursday series, I am going to share with you some of my pictures from The Tower of London that I visited during my last trip to London in summer 2017. The first and most obvious thing that you will notice about The Tower of London is, that it is, in fact, not a tower. According to this wikipedia article, the official name of the site is Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London. It's located just a short walk away from the famous Tower Bridge.
The entrance fee is a bit pricey, but it is well worth the money and you can easily spend half a day roaming the castle and its courtyards. I highly recommend to join the Yeoman Warder tour to learn a bit about the fascinating and dark history of The Tower.
The Tower was founded in 11th(!) century and it served as a prison for over 800 years, which is the most known, but not the only purpose of the fortress. It also served as a royal residence, armoury and treasury, it housed a Royal Mint and Crown jewels of England.
From as early as the end of 12th century, The Tower of London also housed exotic animals. In 19th century, the menagerie was closed down and animals were relocated to London Zoo. This part of Tower’s history is reminded to us by beautiful animal statues all around the space.
This lovely gentlemen is trying to protect the palace against intruders and is reminding us the battles that happened here in the history of The Tower.
Here you can see the courtyard with one of the tower ravens in the middle. According to an old legend, if ravens ever leave The Tower, both the Tower and the kingdom will fall. Also, you can see the housing of current Beefeaters in the background (yes, they live in The Tower).
If you ever visit London, The Tower of London is one of the "must see" places. Especially if yours is "once in a lifetime" visit.
