Havasupai Falls- Who would like to do this?

in travel •  7 years ago

Havasupai Falls, a blue green oasis nestled in the Grand Canyon. Without a doubt one of the most spectacular water formations in the whole Southwestern USA. Gorgeous red rock walls of the Grand Canyon strike a surreal contrast to the mineral rich rushing waters. The water temperature is 70 degrees year round. The perfect temp for a refreshing dip after the 10 mile hike to get here.

This is no photoshopped photograph. The waters of the Falls are truly breath taking! A majestic experience to be had for sure. Crisp mountain air, absolute tranquility and aquamarine pools equal a slice of heaven on earth.

The waterfalls are located on the land of the Havasupai Indian Reservation. A reservation so remote that the people come and go by helicopter, donkey or hike. Cars cannot go beyond the parking area at the trail head approximately 260 miles north of Phoenix, Arizona. The trail head starts at Haulapai Hilltop at 5200 ft elevation. Be prepared for the long, somewhat steep descent to the canyon floor at 2800ft elevation.

In order to visit this blue green haven you will have to seek a permit from the Havasupai tribe. Havasupai translates to "people of the blue green waters". It used to be that you could visit on a whim as a day trek, but now, day treks are not allowed. You must call to make reservation when phone lines open in February to reserve your spot. It is $50 per person to visit the Falls regardless of age, $25 per person camping fee, and $10 environmental fee. The boom in popularity can be attributed to instagram post and a few magazine features which have people around the world flocking to the Havasupai Falls.

"The color of the water is the result of having been stored underground – in limestone caverns or aquifers – for as much as 30,000 years. While underground, the water leaches out minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, from the limestone. These minerals saturate the water and reflect sunlight, making the water a turquoise color." (Waterfalls of the Grand Canyon)

The Havasupai People are so blessed to live on land, so serenely dramatic and unique. There are a series of five waterfalls to explore; New Navajo Falls, Fifty Foot Falls, Havasu Falls, Mooney Falls, and Beaver Falls. I hope "The People of the Blue Green Waters" continue to share this world wonder with everyone, as nature intended. Imagine the sight of the waterfalls. Amazingness! A balm to the soul & spirit.
