Easily accessible from Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton, the Coromandel Peninsula boasts vintage views, wonderful walks and stunning shorelines.
Named after the HMS Coromandel, which sailed into the harbour in 1820, the Coromandel’s towns, forests and beach-fronts are a popular holiday destination for kiwis from all corners of New Zealand. From the remote northern tip with its picturesque coves, to the remarkable Pinnacles of the South, the quaint western township of Coromandel town to the world-class display of natural aesthetics on offer at Cathedral Cove, this pretty peninsula is crammed full of adventures and fun-filled days out.
Here are a few of our favourite outdoor encounters guaranteed to leave you with great memories of this part of the world.
THE PINNACLES
A great full day trek, but an even better overnighter (you don’t want to miss that sunset/sunrise!). This tramp is right up there with some of New Zealand’s best. But, if you do decide to turn in for the night, be sure to book the DOC hut well in advance! It’s quite a popular experience – especially in the warmer months.
The walk is approximately 5-6 hours in length and features a few quite steep parts. Be sure to check out info on this walk here:

CATHEDRAL COVE
One of New Zealand’s renowned national icons, this spectacular piece of coastline is a photographer’s dream. Swim the snorkel trail, take the attractive, and relatively easy, walk route, and spend the day taking in the rays!
HAURAKI RAIL TRAIL
This superb bike track is situated in the scenic Karangahake Gorge at the base of the peninsula. Its an easy ride, leaving you to concentrate on the showcase of stunning scenery and pioneering history along the way. What’s more, guided tours are available online for a more insightful day out.
NEW CHUMS BEACH
This wee slice of heaven has been named one of the world’s best. Hidden away from the masses, it’s tranquil, it boasts beautiful views, incredible photo opportunities and it’s pohutakawa fringed shoreline is definitely a winner for lovers of long lazy days soaking up the sun.
