ITALY.

Almost 4 weeks we drove through your country. Tasted your pasta, your pesto as well as countless kinds of pizza variations, drank your wine & most importantly, tasted your heavenly gelato. We got mad at high prices, fell in love with your language & your beautiful people. Getting lost & found, almost every day. In your capital, we floated through an ocean of cultural heritage sites & fought with millions of other tourists for the best picture at the Fontana di Trevi.
Your landscape literally took our breath away while campsite prices left us having empty pockets. We swam through crystal-clear waters & hiked through endless vineyards. We felt like being on vacation, rushing from one campsite to another one, from one tourist attraction to another. One more place checked off from a never ending list of UNESCO world heritage sites..but was this what we really wanted, what we were looking for?

At the end of a very long, sweaty day, it all came down to not having enough time to actually cope with all the experiences we made, not having enough time to let it all sink in, to simply pause, YES...to just enjoy and most importantly, TO LIVE! And wasn´t this exactly the reason we left our treadmill in Germany behind, was it? To live in the moment, being free & independent, going with the flow & see where life takes us. So that´s when we came to a decision. It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to you.

We completely changed our plans and decided to ship Mister Wombat from Bari to the next country. And well, you saw that coming...the day before our departure you accidentally sent us to Baia di Orte, just as if you wanted to convince us about your beauty. What happened next was simply magic.
The landscape & especially the weather conditions at this day at Baia di Orte were both totally alien, totally surreal!
It completely blew us away...BACK INTO THE PRESENT MOMENT! Baia di Orte reminded us of why we travel! And as if that were not enough, you put on a big show, showing us the most magnificent cloud formations in the shape of mythical creatures of our next destination. "Courage!", it said. "The next chapter is waiting to unfold!"
On the way back to Mister Wombat the Italian sky was giving us the most incredible goodbye. Fireworks everywhere!
A German saying says: "You should go when it´s the best, go when it´s the hardest!"
And so we drove to the harbor the next day...

ARRIVEDERCI ITALIA!
You haven´t been the cheapest country & not the best one for camping, that´s for sure...BUT you were exactly what we needed, FOR US & OUR FUTURE JOURNEY.

ITALIEN.

Nun waren wir über drei Wochen in deinen Landen unterwegs. Haben deine Pasta, dein Pesto, deine unzähligen Pizza-Variationen, deinen Wein & vor allem, dein Gelato gekostet. Haben deine allzu hohen Preise verflucht, uns in deine Sprache & deine Menschen verliebt. Haben uns verloren & wieder gefunden. In deiner Hauptstadt trieben wir durch ein Meer von Kulturgütern & kämpften genervt mit anderen Touristen bei über 37 Grad, um das beste Selfie an der Fontana di Trevi.
Deine Landschaft hat uns den Atem & deine Campingplatzpreise unsere Portemonnaies leer geraubt. Durch kristallklares Wasser treibend & durch deine unzähligen Weinberge wandernd, fühlten wir uns wie im „Urlaub“. Von einem Campingplatz, von einem Sightseeing-Highlight, jagten wir zum nächsten. Ein weiterer Ort abgehakt auf einer scheinbar nie endenden Liste von UNESCO Weltkulturerbestätten...aber ist es wirklich das, was wir wollten?

Am Ende eines langen, durchgeschwitzten Tages mussten wir immer feststellen, dass bei all den „Aktivitäten“, so schön sie auch waren, wenig Zeit blieb, um das Geschehene wirken zu lassen, um einfach mal anzukommen, alles sacken zu lassen, ja um einfach zu leben. Und war es nicht das, weswegen wir ursprünglich unser Hamsterrad in Deutschland verlassen hatten? Mehr Leben in Momenten finden, frei & unabhängig sein, sich treiben zu lassen & sehen, was passiert. Und so entschieden wir uns schweren Herzens, dir „Lebe wohl!“ zu sagen.

Wir schmeißen all unsere Pläne um und wollen von Bari aus ins nächste Land verschiffen. Ja und als ob du es geahnt hättest, als ob du uns noch ein letztes Mal von deiner Schönheit überzeugen wolltest, leitest du uns am letzten Tag völlig unerwartet zur Baia di Orte. Was dann geschah, war einfach magisch. Deine Landschaft dort mit ihrer unfassbar surrealen Schönheit, hat uns im wahrsten Sinne ins JETZT zurückkatapultiert, uns daran erinnert, warum wir reisen. Und damit nicht genug. Als wolltest du uns Mut machen, schickst du uns im Sonnenuntergang die unwirklichsten Wolkenformationen mit Fabelwesen & Helden aus der Mythologie unseres nächsten Landes. Alles steht auf Weiterfahrt. Wir versinken im Moment. Auf dem Rückweg zu unserem Mister Wombat dann überraschst du uns noch mit einem alles zerberstenden Feuerwerk. Was für ein Abschied. Man soll gehen, wenn´s am Schönsten ist. Und so fahren wir am nächsten Tag zum Hafen.

Arrivederci Italia!
Du warst vielleicht nicht das günstigste Land & auch nicht das beste Land für Camper, ABER du warst das Land, was wir brauchten, für uns & unsere weitere Reise.
