Beira Lake
Beira Lake is a vast, man made body of water located smack dab in the middle of the city of Colombo, a sprawling metropolis home to over 750,000 people, in the island country of Sri Lanka. While the lake initially covered a whopping 410 acres of land some 100 years ago, it has since been greatly reduced in size to a mere 160 acres today for reasons that remain unclear.
While the lake’s unmistakable beauty is no doubt a sight for sore eyes, perhaps what’s most impressive about the body of water are the intricate canals connected to it.
These were designed to make the transporting of various goods a far more simplified process, a routine that remains in place today.
History tells us that the lake was constructed by the Portuguese to offer necessary protection to the city of Colombo in the event that nearby enemy would opt to invade or attack the city.
While the lake might look beautiful on the surface, its unmistakable green water colour is the unfortunate result of years and years worth of immense water pollution. It’s also said that Beira Lake carries with it a putrid odour, one that particularly rears its stinky head in the dry seasons due to very high evaporation rates.
