St. Anthony’s Church, or St. Anthony’s Shrine as it is more commonly known to Sri Lankan locals, is located at Kotahena, Colombo. Kotahena is a suburb that makes up one part of Colombo, and it is commonly referred to as Colombo 13 by residents of the area.
Holy Mass (Tamil) at St. Anthony’s shrine takes place daily at 6:00 AM, while Holy Mass (Sinhala) occurs daily at 12:15 PM. On Sundays, Holy Mass (Tamil) begins at 5:30 AM and 7:30 AM, which Holy Mass (Sinhala) is scheduled for both 12:15 PM and 5:30 PM. On Saturdays, Holy Mass in English takes place at 6:00 PM sharp.
St. Anthony’s Shrine is famous, world renowned Roman Catholic Church that has been declared by the Sri Lankan government as a national shrine. This protects the structure and premises from any destruction or redevelopment.
The Shrine originally broke ground in 1806 and construction was fully completed by the year 1828. The Shrine has an Eastward facing facade, and the local government previously issued postal stamps to celebrate the Shrine’s miraculous 175th anniversary.
St. Anthony’s Shrine is a must see landmark for any visitors to the area. It’s beautiful architecture is a sight for sore eyes, and it stands today just as beautiful as the day it opened its doors. It’s open to visitors and to the public for Holy Mass.
