Oaxaca Mexico... A magical place, with beautiful colours, architecture, and wonderful people everywhere!
We have been staying in a little place called Villa De Etla. A bustling little place with a daily market, and a BIG market day on Wednesdays. This has been a tradition with the Zapotecs for centuries.
We learned this from our guide Hector while discovering the ruins of Monte Albán. Hector said each day of the week a different village has a big market, and the big city of Oaxaca has their market on the weekend. This makes it fair for all the vendors to get equal business, and not compete with the big market.
Beautiful traditional clothing from the floor to the ceiling.
Little entrepreneurs, helping their parents in the bustling market of Villa De Etla.
Music on every corner of the Zocalo - In the city center of Oaxaca.
We really enjoyed Monte Albán, and learning about the history of the Zapotecs. What an incredible culture. Hector told us that it wasn't a war, or weather that made people abandon this once thriving community. He said it was over population... Over 100,000 people once lived on this masa up in the mountains overlooking the City of Oaxaca.

This is Hector explaining to Brian the perfection of the climate back when Monte Albán was thriving, but also the risk. Many homes were taken away by landslides, due to the amount of earthquakes in Oaxaca every year. We told Hector we had never witnessed an earthquake before.
No joke... Later that afternoon while lounging in the hammock back in Villa De Etla... We heard the dogs start barking like crazy, the windows banging around, and we gentle started swaying in the hammock.
We looked at each other and said... "No way... Is this an earthquake?"
We jumped out of the hammock and put our bare feet on the ground. Sure enough... We started feeling the sway of the earth, as if we were floating on the surface of water. It was wild! A total spiritual experience.
Ya maybe we should have been more worried... But there is a field in front of the bodega we are staying in, so we would have been just fine!
See we are fine! :)

I have felt a few earthquakes around Portland, Oregon where I'm from. Just a few light shakes a few times the past three decades since I was born in 1985. I like your photos. Very interesting. I really liked my Mexican neighbors in high school and in my neighborhood including a girl I liked, Karla Villa, and I love their food, their strong family first values, their music. Haven't been to Mexico yet but love travel and was in Hawaii and Vietnam which also have strong family cultures as well. Thanks for sharing, hehe. I'm Oatmeal Joey Arnold. You can call me Joey.
