Happy Wednesday Guys!

Yesterday I travelled to one of the natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls. Having only been once before as a kid, I was amazed at the sheer vastness of the falls and just how fast the current flowed.

There was a long stretch of road adjacent to the falls, where I walked for hours, taking it all in. It was a gorgeous hot day, and the mist from the falls filled the air along the road, and blew over every once in a while onto passersby. It was definitely an amazing sight to see and experience.

At a height of about 188 feet, you can feel the extent of the drop when you look down at its plummet. Flowing at approximately 35 miles per hour, with 225,000 gallons of water per second, the sheer speed of the current captures your attention.

Niagara Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in the world. There are two sections of the falls which stretch across the border between Canada and the U.S. -- the American Falls, on the U.S. side of the border, and the Canadian Horsehoe Falls, which I visited in my travels.

There's also quite a significant history in this natural wonder. Although Niagara Falls is not yet on the official list of the natural wonders of the world, many feel it should be. The falls are over 12,000 years old. And due to their sheer volume and speed, erosion has caused the falls to retreat about 6.8 miles south of where they first began, between present-day Lewiston, New York, and Queenston, Ontario.

Here is a map of where the falls were first situated compared to where they are now. The blue line shows the area that the falls encompassed. Then see where Niagara is today on the map many miles south of that.

I will be sharing more of my travels to some other natural wonders of Canada soon!

Niagara Falls is such a magical spot! I went once at night, and there were coloured lights reflecting off the mist. If it hadnt been for all the people and busyness behind, it could've been the gates to fairyland. The day time is even more magnificent, though, because there's no hiding the force of nature plunging over the cliffs! Definitely always a memorable sight!

Yes it is! Thanks so much for the lovely comment and feedback :)

Such a stunning place that is def on our to visit list! great post and beautiful pics!

Thanks for the feedback @amy-goodrich! :)

Excellent Natasha! I missed my chance to see this incredible waterfalls on my previous trip to the states. I hope to make it next time around.

In your opinion, the US side offers better views or the Canadian side?

I hope you get to see it :) I'm trying not to be biased, being Canadian and all, but I really think the Canadian side is better. The horshoe offers a much wider stretch of falls, and there's a very long road where you can walk along the waterfall and see if from many angles. Whereas the US side just has one little balcony view, with much less space for visitors.

It looks absolutely amazing! I would love to visit one day.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks @alcibiades! Really appreciate it :)

Great photos, thanks for sharing :)

Thanks @vickstick!

Great post! Niagara Falls is truly a wonder. Everything around there is fairly flat and then suddenly there's this mammoth powerful waterfall. Crazy.

What do you think of all of the tourist trap stuff there, especially on the Canadian side? Spoils the natural beauty or no problem?

Thanks! Yes exactly! Well, I was hoping to avoid a busy time by going on a Tuesday morning, but no luck there. I had honestly thought I would enjoy it more if it was less busy. And I generally don't engage in all the touristy stuff, it's usually quite overrated and over-priced. But, surprisingly enough, in spite of all this, I really felt like I got to take in Niagara Falls in all it's natural beauty. And I really enjoyed it regardless of all that other stuff :)

I'm glad you had such a great experience there! There's a reason for the crowds since it's so spectacular, and the touristy stuff just comes with it I guess. It is what it is. It doesn't bother me as long as the falls itself don't get changed by people.

Cheers!

Yes, agreed! :)

Just beautiful! Really a wonder of the world @natashahall. Thanks for sharing the info, i am just learning about the 6.8 miles retreat of the falls! Amazing!
