Arachova is located on a hillside of Mount Parnassus, which ends in a ravine, in the depth of which the river Plistos flows. The average altitude of the settlement is 960 meters. The settlement is located on the main road that connects the village of Delphi and the plain of Amfissa with Boeotia. The settlement is 12 km away from the village of Delphi, located to the west, and 160 km away from the city of Athens.
The origin of its name according to the predominant point of view comes from the South Slavic word Orehova which means walnut. In another aspect, its name is probably derived from the village of Rahova, from which residents were persecuted by the Turks during the Ottoman domination. In addition, there is the version according to which the word is derived from two different words and comes from the Greek word ράχη( ridge) and the Slavic word ova (place).
It is a popular winter resort, due to its close distance from the city of Athens and the existence of a ski center
