Exploring Barcelona - The Rocky Range of Montserrat

in travel •  7 years ago

Barcelona is a great city but sometimes you just need to break out of the crowds and experience some nature. I travelled outside of Barcelona with Montserrat in mind, hoping to walk around this famous mountain range and photograph some of the views.

The main focus for me was the hiking and climbing aspect of this area, but I did also get time to walk around the Benedictine Abbey and capture a few of the details inside. The stained glass windows in-particular caught my attention in this building, I'm not sure how old they are but the designs were really beautiful with the light shining through.

"Montserrat" means "saw mountain" in Catalan and describes the unusual rock formations that separate this from others in the area. It was really breathtaking to sit on top of the mountain and photograph the wide open expanses of nature. I hope in the future you can also go and experience this wonderful sight for yourself. For now you can enjoy a few of my own images below.

That looks like an awesome hike. I love the rock formations and how the greenery clings through the cracks and crevices up the vertical faces.

Thanks for pointing me to your post. So you have a photo scanner for your slides/negatives, or do you get it commercially processed and digital copies provided? I think I may have to get a roll of medium format film now...

Hey @aksounder. I used to do it myself a while back when I could use some facilities (dark room etc) but now I process them using the internet. I just send off the roll to a company and they send back a CD with the pictures on. Basically it's all digital and is much cheaper than printing the pictures and less hassle than scanning them in.

You traveled many places😯
I like your style traveling in absolutely natural spot.

Thanks @noopu! Yeah, I am always attracted to nature. I wonder why 🤔 lol

😆 😝 😂

Those are some amazing photos! Especially the last one! You can really see there why it is called Monserrat!

Thanks. My trusty film camera did well this time! haha

Wow imagine staying there and having that view.

Haha yeah! It would be pretty spectacular. There's also a small house on one of the mountain edges (if you look closely on the 6th image), when I saw it I was pretty shocked. Couldn't help thinking about living in that spot :D

Oh jees you are right I almost looked apart of the mountain series :)

You have taken great pictures, my friend, as always.
I love the stained glass windows! yummy .. You're in the right place at the right time and you evaluate very good. congratulations .

Thank you. I try to keep my eye open to the things that looking pleasing on the eye. :)

I am fortunate to have a Finca just South of Tarragona but, for now, am in the UK.

Your photographs make me homesick for the fragrant pine forests and Rosemary which perfumes the air.

Spain is so very beautiful and I intend to grow old either in Barcelona or Seville.

Great post ~ thanks.

Thanks @ldacey-laforge! I appreciate your comment :) Oh really? That sounds very nice. Yeah, Spain is very beautiful. I hope to explore this country in the future in more detail.

such beautiful sites! I didn´t even know Barcelona was good for hikes, I´m currently living in Madrid and I´ve heard it is quite an adventure to go on hikes here, you should come!

Sounds great! I want to visit :D I have been to Madrid once but only for a few days. I hope to visit for longer and explore the nature :)

you definitely should! it is super gorgeous, I´ve written a few posts about it and will write more in the near future.

The Rocky Range is perfectly shaped. I wish I could see that in person. Hope you had a great time. :)

Yeah! It was very nice to see and I had a great time. Thanks for commenting @dawnsheree.

:) Your very welcome.^^

Thanks for sharing. The pictures are vibrant and the atmosphere there should be serene. I value calm places in this busy world. Congrats!

Thanks @alexdory! I appreciate your comment too.

We all need to take a break from time to time... looks like you chose a great place to do that!!... Love the stained glass windows😊

Yeah, the stained glass was a highlight haha So simple, but very nice. Thanks for commenting @tree-hugger

Oh man, that's beautiful! You got some really vibrant pictures in there.

I have been to Barcelona myself but I just stayed within the city, I guess I missed a trick!

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, it's a nice trip outside the city. A little bit of a trek but it was worth it. :D

I bet! I've just started a new VR series where I'm traveling the world using Google Earth with my HTC Vive. The first city is Barcelona! You'll have to swing by and check it out, I plan to explore some of the mountain ranges. Let me know where you were and ill get a little mention thrown in :D

You are doing what I want to do... Staying away the city crowd and being a mountainer(climber+hiker) actually I have just made up this word :) but it looks cool... From the pictures I assume the climate is desert climate and so hot and it means mosquitos at nights... I hope I am wrong my friend

Congrats and have a good time your vacation... :)

Thanks for your comment. Yeah it's a little hot but a little windy too, not many mosquitos (but I'm not sure at night). I hope you get to visit in the future :)

Thank you for this! I've been to Barcelona for two days, and I did not have enough time to visit Monsterrat. Instead, I did enjoy Montjuic a lot. Your photos are breathtaking! The rocks definitely do look interesting!

Thanks for the comment. Oh yes! Montjuic. Barcelona is a very interesting city. I was lucky enough to have a friend who took me to Monsterrat. Maybe I wouldn't have gone otherwise as it's quite far from the city :) You should definitely go next time though :D

I was all alone, and two days is quite a short time! As interesting as it seemed, it was not worth the time or money to travel there, while there was a whole city waiting to be explored!
