TRAVELLING IN OKLAHOMA - HOEPFNER KIWI FARM

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

When in Oklahoma...

On the way back from picking up the greenhouse gifted to us by @weetreebonsai, I noticed that @bluerthangreen and I were heading straight for Eufaula, Oklahoma. It sounded familiar and I quickly searched the corners of my mind for the reference point. Soon, I realized that the Hoepfner Kiwi Farm was located near there.

I'm not sure where I first heard of this place, but you can find out more about it here on the Oklahoma Agritourism site.

DOWN FOR THE DETOUR

Thankfully, @bluerthangreen is the type of homesteader that loves stuff like this too. To get a free tour of a six acre cold hardy kiwi farm was right up his alley too. Simple put, visiting places like this is inspirational, and shows you some of the things that are possible. To be a few minutes away instead of a few hours away just makes it that much better and easier!

Soon, we pulled in and were greeted by Mr. Hoepfner. As it turns out, his father started the farm and began growing the cold hardy kiwis because of health issues. He had been given about three years to live due to some heart issues and shortly after getting that bad news he came across an article in a magazine about all of the health benefits of the kiwi. He then started growing kiwis and lived another twenty years. I share a bit about some of those benefits in this video here, where I also demonstrate how to properly shave the large, fuzzy kiwis.

HOW TO PROPERLY SHAVE A KIWI

The cold hardy kiwis grown on this farm are a smaller, smooth variety, that almost look like green grapes when the produce their harvest. That means you do not need to shave this variety.

THE PLANTS

In the pot above that @bluerthangreen is looking at, you can see a thick vine growing up into the tree. These kiwis are grown on perennial vines that can actually produce fruit for up to fifty years. While the plants can be started from seed, most often people propagate them from cuttings.

This giant tangle of vines is a more mature plant. A few varieties are self-fruitful, but most kinds have both female and male plants which are needed for pollination. A fully mature female plant could potentially produce up to 200 pounds of fruit in a single year.

Here you can see another large vine growing up the shelter at the information center. If they are provided with solid support, the vines will continue to grow and produce in an upright position, rather than bushing out or sprawling across the ground.

Many people will also build arbors for them to grow over. Then, you can sit in the shade provided by the plant and even pluck fruit from overhead during the harvest. It would be wonderful to sit under one of these arbors on my own homestead one day, relaxing in some chairs with @mama-pepper in the shade that they provide. Time will tell, and we will have to see, but one can dream!

At this time of year, the plants were not exactly in their prime of the year, but we did not want to miss the opportunity. Both @bluerthangreen and @papa-pepper have some younger vines of these plants already started at home, so we wanted to observe some more mature plants in person. Depending on the time of year, they may have soap, plants, or the fresh harvest for sale! If you are ever in the area, I'd recommend stopping in for some free fun and education, no matter what time of year it is.

HOEPFNER KIWI FARM VIDEO

Here is a video from YouTube of the farm being toured earlier in the year. This will provide you with a better understanding of what the vines look like when they are green and growing.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Cool, thanks!

Very interesting post with the history of the health need and how the owner was able to grow the kiwi that helped him live many more years than the doctor thought he could. It really seems to be divine guidance.

Yeah, food can be our medicine in a lot of cases!

Hey! I'ma kiwi, I now know my nutritional value & how to shave myself properly. Looking great @papa-pepper! Glad you're not eating the kiwi birds lol. I have never seen anyone shave a kiwi hahaha crack up!

LOL! Thanks!

Good jop

Thanks @safrijals!

Yes you are welcome.
your promise..

Nice post, I learned something new today thank to you're post:)

Thanks man, I'll stop over and see how you are doing!

Hmmm maybe I need to try growing a few of these! Thank You for the information on them!

Perhaps you should try them. I think that you can grow regular kiwis down there too. I hope to be able to grow and propagate them in the future.

Yes I know the fuzzy ones you shave grow here but we do have some temps to deal with also.

this place is a friend, it seems this place is banned man haphazardly.
@papa-pepper

I am sorry, but I do not understand that comment.

this place is a friend, because I see in this place a lot of information boards.

Ilike the way they grow. I think if I did grow them I would to give the fruit away or perhaps sell it at market since my family have an allergy to kiwi fruit. I know it is weird. But is the way the cookie crumbles. 😉

good post friends. I like

Great impressions... thanks for sharing @papa-pepper!

Do not copy the comments of others.

Very ice place

A very nice place indeed! Thanks!

When you hear the word "kiwi" do think about this:

or this:?

Top one if I'm going to be eating them!

Im curious if she went there just to shoot the video or if she figured hell sence im here. I live in sw washington and some people bought some property down the street and tried the whole kiwi thing, turns out the dont like the rain as much as apples do. They only lived there a couple years before moving to try the kiwi farm somewhere else im sure.

Not sure about that. Good to know that they don't like too much rain.

Ive tried to grow these KIWI's before and haven't been too successful. This last go around I had two large male plants coming right along but didn't survive Harvey! Once I get a larger piece of land, that's def gonna be on the homestead!!

Ouch, that Harvey messed up some stuff for people for sure. I hope it'll work out eventually.

It's an adventure for sure!

Gotta love Kiwis. Those look tasty without the fuzz! The farm looks beautiful when all green but nice to understand the structure of the planets without the leaves. You're always educating me!

Thanks for checking it out. Great avatar!

I have 55 more thanks to you!

LOL! More to come!

Yes! If you have a chance... check my retrospective with a little promo for season 2:

NICE! I'll check it!

Never know they have kiwi farm in US and 7 days a week tour. i thought will be too cold for that some season.

The fuzzy ones grow farther south here, but the smaller smooth ones are cold hardy. Thanks @ace108!

Ha! love the shaving video. All with such a straight face.
And you found a roadside attraction. Sounds like you boys had quite the road trip!

That video was tough to make, I can't watch it with a straight face!

He did a great job of dead panning (Not easy to do)!

@papa-pepper what??? Is this something common done in Oklahoma with kiwis?? lol Interesting. Have you heard of the new 7 wonders of the world? I just came home from one :)

Awesome! Great Adventure lol

What's with shaving kiwi fruit? you just eat them, or if you are squeamish
cut them in half and scoop out the middle with a teaspoon, you can scrape down to the skin without wasting any.

As a kiwi myself I am totally against the farming of kiwis. they should be left to roam the world freely looting, whoops, I mean, collecting things as they go.

We are free loving folk and we should not be farmed, and only shaved by mutual consent.

Come on Steemit join with me and fight this tyranny. #freethekiwi!

[for those who don't get it, this is a joke. Really it is. Kiwis actually like being on farms.]
