The Beauty Of Watkins Glen State Park, New York

in travel •  8 years ago

In the Finger Lakes area of New York State are several state parks, the most famous being Watkins Glen State Park. The park is located in a 60 meter deep gorge cut through rock by a glacier during the Ice Age. At the bottom of the canyon flows Glen Creek. Over a distance of 3 kilometers the water flows here 120 meters down via a series of 19 waterfalls and rapids . The park has three entrances: the Main Entrance , the Upper Entrance and the South Entrance.

Starting from the car park at the Main Entrance you can see the first waterfall of the park, the Entrance Falls. You climb a few steps up through a short tunnel, then walk through the Sentry Bridge into the gap. The trail now continues along Glen Creek. On your way you constantly see beautiful waterfalls and rapids, including the 15 meter high Cavern Cascade and 18 meters high Central Cascade. Two times you walk behind a waterfall by the Cavern Cascades and the Rainbow Falls.

The last part of the footpath is flatter, Glen Creek is wider and calmer here. At the very end you reach Jacob's Ladder, a staircase with 180 steps to climb to the top of the gorge.

A totally amazing place...
