A while back my wife and I thought we would try a tropical resort in our own continent for a change. We booked a week at the Indian Ocean Beach Club at Diani Beach in Kenya. To get there we flew out from Johannesburg to Mombasa with Kenya Airways. The hotel shuttle picked us up and drove us the forty odd kilometres south along a pothole-infested road to the resort.
The resort was very neat and our accommodation pleasant. The buildings consisted of the main reception and restaurant area, a large pool and detached en suite buildings with thatch roofs for the rooms.
Everything was right on the beach and you could walk out your door and go down for a swim in the sea or pool.
Diani Beach is a popular resort area in Kenya and has numerous other resorts all with sea frontage.
The food was first class in the restaurant and although our rate only included breakfast and dinner, we could order light lunches extra and enjoyed them on our patio.
Our main aim was to go snorkelling and we booked three trips. The first was to the Kisite Marine National Park at Wasini Island about fifty kilometres south. Here a traditional dhow took us to the dive spot on beautiful coral.
The other times were near to the resort where snorkel boats took us to the outer reef that was teeming with tropical fish.
The Kenyan people are amazing and their hospitality was first class.
