I'm still working on our trip to El Penol, so though I would go ahead and post some pictures taken while travelling the Metro through Medellín. I did not expect to find the actual city to be so lovely, as this is often not the case with large cities. Medellín is Colombia's second largest city with a population of 2,508,452 people in 2017
A Metro Tour of Medellin
Medellín is the capital of Colombia’s mountainous Antioquia province. Nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring” for its nice climate (around 75˚F) that is due to its approximately 5000 foot elevation. Once the city had an issue with reputation, but now is a very popular travel destination and boasts a rich culture that delight all visitors.
Medellín is anything but boring. In fact, in 2013 Medellín was named the most innovative city in the world in the Wall Street Journal's City of the Year Contest. It has a plethora of libraries, museums, parks, and other public spaces where many cultural events take place.
In this next shot you can see the hills rising around this city. Because of Medellín's location, rising out of the Aburrá Valley, there are plenty of activities in the surrounding area like hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities.
Medellín is a colorful city with a variety of architectural styles where tall brick buildings rise alongside modern glass edifices.
One thing that really struck me, is that Medellín must be one of the greenest cities I have ever seen. Granted, I have not travelled much in South America, so perhaps this is normal, but compared to the sterile, concrete downtowns I am used to, this was a surprise. Walking along paths lined with the tallest palm trees I have ever seen has a relaxing effect that allows you a better enjoyment of your excursion.
Public transportation is fantastic. You can see the taxi's in the next picture, and I was already on the very nice and efficient metro. There is also a 'cable metro' we will cover in a separate blog post, and a nice bus system as well. Traffic is a bit of a nightmare, so leave the car outside, and you'll have more fun and an easier time getting from place to place in the city.
This was a typically beautiful day, and it was easy to ride the metro and experience the city in a unique way. Of course, the Metro is very popular, and very crowded, but the people are friendly and even nice to foreign travelers, which is not true of other large cities I have visited.

Overall thoughts on my first day in Medellin
Honestly, I'm not really a 'city' person. I do not care for crowds or noise. In a place like New York, I'd be thinking only about how to escape most of the time. Here in Medellín on the other hand, the combination of the rich flora, the friendly people, and the fact there are plenty of places to spend time outside really make a big difference. I actually really enjoyed Medellín and quickly came to appreciate it's unique character.

Well, I still owe a post about El Penol, but also there are several fun stops in Medellín that will be featured in upcoming posts. These include the 'Cable Metro', Eating at Kokoriko (one of my favorite chicken joints), and at the famous Astor restaurant, and of course a stop at the Botero Square to visit some of his great statues.
We have many great places to visit and and as I mentioned, in support of Witness Cervantes and the Spanish speaking community, we will include bilingual content.
