My beautiful homeland, the Czech Republic, is full of stunning architecture and I just realized I have captured many different types of impressive towers during my recent photography trips around the country. I picked some of these shots to compile a little selection from it and I am happy to share it with you in this post :) It is also my entry for today´s #architecturalphotography contest hosted by @juliank.

Cvilin Lookout Tower

One of the most dominant features of the Silesian town of Krnov, this beautiful lookout tower was built in 1903 and it is located on the top of the Cvilin Hill. With its foot being 436 m (1,430 ft) above the sea level, the Cvilin Tower offers some breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the town of Krnov itself.

Old Town Water Tower

Found on the right bank of the Vltava River in the historic center of Prague, the Old Town Water Tower was built in 1883 but the very origins of the tower date back to the 15th century when a wooden tower was standing on the same spot. These days, the tower is a part of the Bedrich Smetana Museum.

Petrin Lookout Tower

This huge steel-framework observation tower that was built on the top of the Petrin Hill in 1891, originally as a transmission tower but now, it mainly serves as a tourist attraction with more than a half a million visitors annually. Strongly resembling the iconic Paris landmark Eiffel Tower, the Petrin Tower offers some astonishing panoramic views of Prague.

Old Town Bridge Tower

Known as "Staromestska Mostecka Vez" in the Czech language, the Old Town bridge Tower is an iconic architectural landmark found at the entrance/exit to the Charles Bridge in Prague. Built in the second half of the 14th century, it is one of the most impressive and renowned Gothic towers in all Europe.

Hans Kudlich Lookout Tower

Located on the top of a hill in the little Silesian village of Uvalno, the Hans Kudlich Tower was named after Hans Kudlich, a prominent Czech-German politician who was born in Uvalno in 1823. The tower offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and you can see as far as to Poland from it.

White Tower in Hradec nad Moravici

Overlooking the picturesque Silesian landscape around the famous Hradec nad Moravici Chateau, the White Tower stands 40 m (131 ft) tall. Added to the main structure in 1887, the White Tower is the youngest, yet most recognizable part of the chateau.

Clock Tower of Opava City Hall

Located on the Upper Square in the historic center of Opava, the Clock Tower is a part of the Opava City Hall. The very origin of the building dates back to the early 14th century when there was a wooden tower standing on the site. In the 16th century, however, the wooden tower was destroyed by a devastating windstorm and it was replaced with a new tower that was made from stone.

Zizkov Television Tower

Built between 1985 and 1992 in a Prague neighborhood called Zizkov, the Zizkov Television Tower is an unusual transmitter tower and one of the most distinctive modernist structures found in the Czech capital. Standing 216 m (709 ft) tall, the tower has an observatory at 93 m (305 ft) from where the visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the city. Decorated with giant sculptures of crawling babies, the tower often ranks among the ugliest buildings in the world.
