Last year, I traveled through Australia with my girlfriend - cheap-backpacking style. We bought an old 4 wheel drive and used that as our home base while traveling through the country.
I thought it could be nice to share our pictures with all of you. If you're deciding to take a trip to Australia, these photos come in handy to give you an idea of what you definitely must see/do.
I'll keep the texts short, and the pictures flowing! :-).
This is the complete trip
This is the trip we did during 1 year. I'll be posting pictures in a couple of series.
Part 1: The Great Ocean Road
"The Great Ocean Road" is a popular stretch of highway along 250km of Australian South coast. While literally driving on the edge of the country, you'll pass by beautiful villages, beaches, rain forest, and much more.
Small beach along the Great Ocean Road.
Rainforest along the Great Ocean Road.
Kangaroos roam freely in the small villages along the coast. Best location to spot them is the golf course of Anglesea.
And of course koalas! Best place to spot them: Along the Otway Lighthouse Road (about 12km long).
A typical day in the life of an Australian.
That's an emu.
Dried up lake.
Part of the Great Ocean Road.
Our verdict
The Great Ocean Road (or short: GOR) is the perfect weekend getaway. It's only 250km long, but with plenty of awesome stops along the way. It was our first trip when we arrived in Australia and we were immediately immersed into the local way of life: laid-back and in between the animals :).
Questions about places to visit? Let me know in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them.
Part 2
Look at more coastline photos and our first mountain views in part 2 of this series.
I'd love to hear a bit about how expensive it is to do a trip to australia like this. Did you do work & travel or just travel?

@saper,
Yes, we worked and traveled.
Australia is an expensive country, but if you're from Europe, UK or US, the Australian Dollar is significantly weaker than USD,EUR or GBP - so you gain with that.
In general, decent food (not the cheapest stuff at the store) is more expensive but there are plenty of deals going on in the store which drives the prices down.
Unless you're from the middle east, gas prices will be cheaper than what you're used to.
The most expensive things are beer and paying for entertainment.
In general, Australia is one of the more expensive countries in the world, so it's not cheap. But so worth it!

So close to the big city, and yet so beautiful! For European standards, it may even feel remote at some points :)

We do have many blessings in this country. It does feel fully remote/isolated in some parts.

What an epic trip! I live in Melbourne and my wife and I, along with our two young kids, have only just started seeing Australia ourselves. We have bought a camper trailer and its our mission now to explore as much of our country as possible!
I'm yet to do the GOR and will hopefully do it in the next 12 months. Where did you stay and what were the must see sights to stop at?
