The Mighty SELA PASS

in travel •  7 years ago

Sela Pass, also known as Se La, is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4,170 m (13,700 ft) above the sea level, located inTawang District of Arunachal Pradesh state of India. It’s amongst the most frequented tourist destination in the whole of Arunachal Pradesh.

Besides its geographical importance, Sela Pass is breathtaking place always covered in snow providing some beautiful views of the eastern Himalayan range. The rocky pass is also home to one of Arunachal's most beautiful lakes - the Sela Lake.

The climb is simply terrible, with a notorius lack of oxygen that tests the organisms and a high degree of steepness. The ever-windy Sela Pass gets heavy snow in winters and is usually open throughout the year unless landslides or snow require the pass to be shut down temporarily. This place is snowed in most of the year and offers excellent and heavenly views all year round. The air is thin, oxygen is less and one gets tired and starts panting very soon. Despite this the experience of just being there is exhilarating.

Legend of Sela Pass
According to the legend, Jaswant Singh Rawat, an Indian army sepoy fought alone against the Chinese soldiers near the Sela Pass during the Sino-Indian war in 1962. A tribal woman named Sela brought food and water to him but killed herself on seeing his mutilated body. The brave Jaswant Singh was later posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.

The best time to visit Sela Pass & Lake. Even though Sela Pass is open throughout the year, the best months to visit are October, November, March, April and May as there are less chances of the route being snowed-in due to the snowfall.
