Your description of the bioluminescence was very well written. Showed your strength there. Again making me feel like one is missing out big time if they dont experience some diving in this life. Have you heard of this dive log app ? My friend works for them and it sounds pretty cool. https://www.deepblu.com/discover/live

Yeah @hami, it makes me grin ear to ear just thinking about that experience with the Dinoflagellates. No, I haven't come across that dive log app before, I shall definitely check it out. I would like to get all my logs transferred from my log books to some digital medium before travelling and this could be just the ticket. Thanks for letting me know about it :-)

I use mares dive organizer, it's a free app. Got pointed in that direction because I have a Mares dive computer and can export all data but I also added manual dives based on my log from the time before I got a computer.

But if you don't have an import requirement, then there are better dive apps. I would definitely advice for it because you have a backup in case your dive log gets lost.

And it's fun to ad dive maps and pics so you can check back how the dive spot was when you go back years later.

That rock reminds me of the precariously situated homes on the mountain slopes of Malibu, CA.

Thanks for the nice article.

Ha ha, I can see your point @jaichai. It is somewhat precariously situated. I climbed to the top of where the rock is in that picture and kept thinking it was going to fall on me :-)

wow awesome post!! looks like a fantastic trip! <3

Thanks @mountainjewel. Yes, it was an amazing trip and I realized the other day that the reason for my over-riding passion for scuba diving is due to these first trips. I was immensely lucky to see so many things that some divers have to wait years to experience. It seems to be my fate with diving, I have encounters with large marine life and rare macro stuff quite frequently. That Durbin Dancing shrimp is an example, I didn't really know what I was looking at then but if I saw them now, I would be studying them for at least 10 minutes. Thanks for stopping by, I'm glad you enjoyed the post :-)

I really liked the first photo! Thank you for sharing

You're most welcome @voronenka. glad you enjoyed the dive trip :-)

Thanks so much for this gift of a bot upvote etcmike. I really appreciate it buddy :-)

oh man you totally got my heart on this one! i've never been under water as you have to experience bioluminescence, but i have seen it on water. it definitely, as you say, reminds one of the beauty and magic of nature.. how much pure majesty exists in the world.

It amazed me the monumental difference in the health of the reef away from man's influence.

this also strikes me... just how much of an impact we have and also how you note when we leave human habitation how nature carries on and heals without us present... This place in Thailand sounds very amazing and I may have to ask you for further travel details if I ever decide to travel to Thailand! xo

Most definitely ask away if you make it to Thailand :-)

Nature does heal when left alone for the most part but I have heard upsetting reports that most of the coral has bleached in the Similian isles along with others reefs around Thailand. Apparently this happened a few years back. This trip post was written from memory of a trip ten years ago. I hope if I make it back that the bleaching reports are over exaggerated as coral takes hundreds of years to recover... but to end on a less sad note... the bioluminescence under the sea is a wonder you can most definitely still see. I've never experienced anything like it since, it is hard to top and I went snorkeling with Whale shark a few years back in Mexico. The experience of

Silver-blue flecks, tracing stars through the black emptiness, comet tails of bioluminescence erupting in the inky reef-scape.

Is one that ranks up there with meeting my whale shark friends :-)

Such a nice trip on the Similan islands, pictures are amazing, chances to see whale sharks and manta rays.
