Yesterday the family took a day's excursion down to what's called the 'Hungarian Sea' or better known as Lake Balaton in Hungary. Many come over to Hungary thinking that Budapest, the capital city, is the only attraction and place to spend a short weekend break or vacation. In reality, there are many beautiful places to see and Lake Balaton is one of them, especially in the summer. The lake is the largest in Central Europe being 77 km (48miles) long at the max length and 14 km (9miles) at max width. Balaton is one big resort area as you move from town to town each offering it's own variety of cafes, shops, wines, restaurants and culture.
One of my favorite places is Tihany on the north shore. It's a small, elevated peninsula projecting towards the center of the lake. The town was founded in 1055 AD and the main church on top of the hill -which is seen today- is one of the most popular tourist attractions. It was originally built in 1055 AD, but reconstructed several times until 1754 and then again later in the 20C.
The town has it's own deep-rooted history, which you can read about online, but as the saying goes, 'a picture is worth a thousand words'. The area is flourishing not only with tourists, but also with craft boutique shops from Hungary. And yes, after a little shopping and exploring the area, you can easily sit into one of the numerous restaurants, cafes and of course, ice cream shops to cool off and relax before continuing on. From the top of the hill, the views are absolutely spectacular - some of the best I've ever seen.
I hope you enjoy the pictures and find the motivation to come out and visit Hungary and all it has to offer. Tihany is about 1-2 hours out of Budapest, so if you're in Budapest, just rent a car, jump on train, hop on a bus and come down to see Lake Balaton and Tihany . You'll love it... We sure do :)
