Africa #9: Addo Elephant National Park + Lion attack! (11 photos)

After a day on the road (Underberg to Port Elizabeth) we are going for the second most visited park in South Africa (and that is for a reason!), the Addo Elephant Nationalpark.
Once again we decided to do the safari on our own and drove to the gate at 7am. We spent the whole day in the park and had a great time spotting animals.

Around 5pm we drove towards the exit and were a little bit disappointed that we still hadn’t seen a lion yet. But the park itself was so amazing that we weren’t really disappointed at all ;)

Suddenly we saw a safari jeep standing at the side of the road, staring behind some bushes. We weren’t able to see behind those bushes because our car was too low. Sometimes it can be a good idea to do a guided safari. The ranger told us there were some water buffalos and apparently a lion who spotted them. Suddenly he came out of the bush, crossed the street without even looking at us, just focusing the buffalos.

He began to run after the buffalos and after about 10 seconds he got one. We couldn’t see the buffalo being eaten because that was behind the bushes too, but boy we could hear it. The poor buffalo was screaming for at last 5 minutes until his breath became weaker and weaker.

The rest of the buffalos just kept standing nearby and watched their friend being eaten. Suddenly a park guide came and told us the park is closing. What an intense moment to finish the day!
