I'm in Phuket, Thailand largest island, checking it out. It's interesting to compare it to Chiang Mai β which is the location independent entrepreneurs #1 choice.
What's so great about Phuket?
It's the beach. Simple.
Imagine what it would be like to live next door to a beach. It's 3pm in the afternoon, you've finished the work you wanted to do on your business ... you head down the beach!
My friend who lives there goes surfing and play beach volleyball.
If neither of those two sport are your thing you could always run on the beach, walk, swim, or simply sunbathe.
But that's not all. Even though Phuket is a busy island the air traffic pollution is far worse in Chiang Mai.
So it's a healthier lifestyle.
But I prefer Chiang Mai. Why?
Soooo many reasons.
As Chiang Mai is the location independent entrepreneurs #1 destination, you are never short of other entrepreneurs to bounce ideas off. This is one of the main reasons why I've stayed in CM for so long.
There are other benefits: it's cheap, it's a beautiful city, the food's great.
The area around Chiang Mai is also very beautiful.
The people
But, to be honest, I think the number one reason why I love Chiang Mai is the people.
In Chiang Mai you will get an authentic northern Thai experience. You won't meet any Thais initially from Phuket, in Phuket. It's a touristy island so everyone you meet, at least when you first get there, will be from other places and will leave the island soon.
Chiang Mai is more of a relaxed regional capital. Nobody's going anywhere. There's a real local and international community.

Great article, mate! I live in Phuket for a few years already and just posted an article about my trip to Chiang Mai as well! What a coincidence! I would say living in Phuket is much better, as you have access to the sea and dozens of different islands surrounding Phuket. Probably have more jobs for foreigners as well! I followed you and upvoted, cheers, mate!

wow, what a coincidence! We're both writing about CM and Phuket from different perspectives. I see you've traveled around this area a lot as well. I look forward to more of your posts.

Yeah, enjoying my life in Thailand as well :)I wouldn't say that pollution is higher in Phuket, then in Chiang Mai, btw. The Airport is situated in the North of the island, most part of the population and tourists live at least 30 km away from it. But car traffic in Phuket is nothing compared to Chiang Mai, which is much worse as you breathe in the pollution they give directly. More over ,I just started to type smog in google and one of the proposed searches was " smog in Chiang Mai". So I guess ecology is much better in Phuket ;)

I like the attitude of Chiang Mai citizens way better than phuketians:) People are more opened, ready to help and don't think only about making a profit. That's a big issue here in Phuket because most part of locals came from other provinces to work here and get money!

Yes, that's definitely one of the reasons I like CM. Most of the people there are from northern Thailand so it's more of a genuine northern Thai experience.

I was in Phuket during July 2017, and again in February 2018 but in both occasions, I stayed only in Patong. I am curious about visiting the whole island, and as well go to Chiang Mai, I wonder if I would ever like it. In fact, I was looking for some information about the differences, and this video done by Rob Cubbon is good and inspirational. Thanks.

Hello again, @mrkenzo1950 I would recommend Rawai in the south of Phuket β and you do have nightlife there as well although not the same as Patong. And I've written about Chiang Mai nightlife as a reply to your other comment on my other post. Thanks!
