The polygonal columns of layered basalt are the result of an ancient volcanic eruption some 60 million years ago. The majority of the columns are hexagonal, with the tallest around 12 metres high.
It is not one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world but it's probably one to the people of Northern Ireland. There are four stunning trails at the Giant’s Causeway so that you spend time enjoying this natural wonder. It's not surprising that these unusual rock formations attract visitors from all over the world.
It was named the Giant's Causeway, as according to legend, the rocks are the remains of a fight between an Irish and Scottish giant. Keep an eye out if you ever go for a visit!

We have these in our neck of the woods too. The hexagons are formed from contraction of the rock as the lava cools slowly underground. The slower it cools the larger the Hexagon.
