YOUR BEST LINDAU GUIDE – TOWN WITH VIEW TO THE ALPS

in travel •  6 years ago

Lake Constance (in German Bodensee) is one truly amazing place between 3 countries – Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It is located in the foothills of the Alps that way giving an amazing view for locals and tourists. In lake Constance is more than 10 islands, but my beloved is Lindau – the second largest island. Lindau is full of medieval buildings, romantic restaurant, boat tours, and walking promenades. It is a very romantic, beautiful and scenic place. Perfect for families, children, pets and everyone else! This is a place where my mom said: ‘’I want to spend here my oldness!’’

BEGIN IN THE RIGHT PLACE

As we, me and my family, have visited Lindau more than 5 times, we already know with what to start our day and where to go better! The first important thing is to know where to start your day, in our case – where to park the car. Our favorite parking place is Seeparkplatz P5. It is located exactly in the right place on this island. This parking place is enough large (about 660), it’s not too expensive (8 EUR per day or 1,40 EUR per 1 hour) and it’s the best place where to begin your day in Lindau!

FIND LINDAU CHARM

Come to Lindau early in the morning and you will be surprised how calm and beautiful this place is without other tourists! When we started our walk, it was about 10 o’clock. Directly from the parking place, Seeparkplatz P5 is a beautiful promenade along the shore of the lake Constance. In this promenade, you can find beautiful viewing platforms, Powder Tower, gardens, tree alleys, views to the Alps, a small shop with interesting ceramic products and Lindaus charm. Just go along the lake and enjoy the view!

ENJOY THE MOMENT

At the end of the promenade, you will see something unforgettable. At least, for me, this place is more than just amazing! It’s the well-known harbor entrance with a lighthouse (Neuer Lindauer Leuchtturm) in one side and Bavarian lion on the other side of the entrance. Also, this place, in reality, looks very majestic. I took here my best photos and get the best feelings! You can also reach the top of Lindaus lighthouse and enjoy an impressive panorama view. Or you can take an iced coffee in some of the numerous cafes and watch the ship, cutter and sailboat activity in the harbor. This view is worth to take a pause in your walk, relax and enjoy the moment.

WANDER THROUGH THE HEART OF LINDAU

From the harbor, you can very easily get to the heart of Lindau – historical center. Just go away from this beautiful harbor with Bavarian lion straight inside in the town jungle! I don’t want to tell you where exactly you need to go because every single street in Lindau is special. Make no plan for Lindaus center. Wander! That’s the best what you can do there! Just don’t forget to visit 3 very important places: Old Town Hall – what perhaps is one of the most interesting historic buildings with painted facade, Maximilian street (Maximilianstraße) with its Gothic and Renaissance style buildings, cafes and boutiques and main square ‘’Marktplatz’’ – Lindaus heart with one of the most important town monuments.

VISIT LAKE CONSTANCE

One more thing you need to do while exploring Lindau is a ship round tour! As we already know, Lindau is located in Lake Constance which is between 3 countries – Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This fact is really impressive that’s why I think a ship tour is an excellent choice for exploring a little bit more! In a ship round tour, you can cross German/Austrian border, hear new information, see more beautiful views, relax, eat some ice cream r pizza, drink wine, spend your time with your family and friends without rush and enjoy this day! As in the main harbor are too many ships and tourists I found a very good ship tour a little bit further from the town center. It means, that there wouldn’t be thousands of tourists and waiting lines! We get on the ship one of the latest persons, but get a table with a brilliant view!

If you want to find this ship tour, you need to find ‘’Schiffsbetrieb Wiehrer’’. This is the ticket sales point address: Auf dem Wall 2, 88131, Lindau (Bodensee). Near a street circle stands a small kiosk, where you can buy your tickets for ship round tour. Tickets cost from 11 EUR. For more information visit their homepage: http://www.ms-bayern.de/

COMPLETE YOUR TRIP WITH SOMETHING SPECIAL

After a long and adventure full day, there is still one thing where you need to go. Not a lot of people, especially tourists, know about this place because you can get there going through a very tiny street with a low ceiling. In the first moment, it seems like going into some garden or private territory but it isn’t like that. Find Gerberschanze and catch the Lindaus charm! At the end of this small street is one of the best viewing platforms I know (called ‘’Aussichtsplattform an der Linde’’). I am always having here some relaxing minutes. There are some benches with a view exactly to the Alps. Ohh, I just can’t explain to you how beautiful it is! You need to see this place with your own eyes!

SUMMARY

In my summary, I can tell you only good things about this amazing town – Lindau. It’s truly a very, very, very beautiful, amazing, charming and unforgettable place. Lindau is located on a lake which is between 3 countries and that is giving a strong specific feeling! It’s a wonderful place for all your big family, friends, children and dogs. And I never heard anything bad about this place.

Yeah, maybe this is it? Maybe I found that small paradise on the earth? ♥

I live in Schaffhausen which is very close to the Bodensee but I haven't made it to Lindau yet. I've been several times to Konstanz, St. Gallen and other cities around the lake but somehow never thought about visiting Lindau. I even saw it from the highway :)

Now I know what I'll probably do this weekend if the weather will be nice :) it really looks like a charming town that is definitely worth a visit.

Thank you for this tip and have a nice day!

Thank you for good words! In Berlin this weekend needs to be more than +20°C so maybe you will also have a luck 😊 I hope you will like Lindau as much as I. ❤

I haven't been in other cities around Lake Constance, what you would recommend me for my next trip?
