Carry On Exploring-McCaig's Tower, Oban

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

Everywhere we looked we saw the collasium that was perched above the hills of Oban, but we couldnt find away to see what was actually up there.

Throughout our trip we came to the conclusion that the best ways to find things in Oban was to stumble across them.

And we did just that with MCaigs Tower after driving up the steep hills we came across the hidden treasure. Our sporty little fiat abarth did not let us down as it grumbled up the high roads of Oban.

The monument was designed by a wealthy victorian architect called John Stuart McCaig who built the monument. In 1897 as a present for his family.

Mr McCaig had a passion for Greek and Roman architecture and intended the building to have a central tower and a museum in the centre. Inside it was also intended to host statues of himself and his family.

His death put an end to the plans. It now hosts a delightful garden area with a terrace that overlooks a picturesque view of Oban.

Here are somes of the momument inside.

Awesome awesome to be there really nice travelling

I wondered what that structure was from the previous pictures. It definitely has the feel of Rome from a distance, but the crenellated gateway put me more in mind of castle battlements and the openings are reminiscent of cathedrals. Very interesting history. More research. Yay!!

I'm glad they found a use for it after his death. It looks lovely!

Yes it's really very interesting. My hubby said this was the best part finding this but mine is still to be posted (Includes a trip to a neighbouring island) We have just got home now. :-(

Glad you made it back safely and with some great memories to recall at will. I'll keep a look out for your fav!
