Moving from PC to Laptop

I'm traveling around a lot more since retiring and when I get back home I have a stack of emails waiting for me!

Sure you youngsters are probably shouting a dozen reasons why this needn't be so, and no doubt your right.

However, they are all a bit too technical for me. Yes, I have a smartphone the email is a different one to my 'business' one and I do like some separation between the two.

So I thought of a simple solution. Get rid of my big PC and get a nice light laptop.

Then I can check my emails whilst sunning myself on a desert island, just as all these sales gurus do that constantly pester me.

After ploughing through all the options, listening to advice from my son and doing all the research I have ended up with just the right model. And for this week it is the latest model. Hopefully, it will last a nice long time, because.....

Passwords...

I forgot about having to reset all the passwords on the new laptop. I just was amazed at how many of the day to day items needed a password before I could do anything!

Some of my day to day activities I have had on the computer 20 years (yes.. I was involved with computers last century). So needles to say some of those programs had a simple six letter word for the password.

Then some companies decided I needed some numbers as well, then a little later needed other characters and eventually, companies like Steemit have really gone to town.

Anyway, as you can guess I have a whole mixture.

It was easy with the old PC I added it once and got the computer to remember it. This last week I've been trying to link them all on my laptop, one program may have had numbers at the beginning/middle/end or no numbers at all.

That's my excuse for not posting anything for a while.

Now I have most of my programs sorted and probably all the files I need transferred, except one. Trouble is I don't know what that one is and I suspect I wont find out until I have got rid of the PC to a charity shop. (Having first deleted all sensitive files).

I'm delaying doing that for a month just in case.

Just one problem to solve, that is, can I rely on fingerprint security as I travel around.

I really need a new PC... maybe I'll get a laptop instead. Seems like a nice choice. :-)

Passwords, passwords, and more passwords. It really starts to get annoying. Even more, when you start adding a 2FA layer on top of the passwords. One of these days I'll spend my whole day just logging into a single site. Ahahahha!

I've found your article after reading @macoolette's entry for the Pay It Forward Contest

If I go on vacation, I won't bring a laptop because no matter how I try, work is tailing along.

Then some companies decided I needed some numbers as well, then a little later needed other characters and eventually, companies like Steemit have really gone to town.

This made me laugh, literally and alone, at pass 10:00 o'clock at night. I really wonder why they keep making things difficult for us, yeah? 😂 Kidding aside, I remember when our password in school was just "passwd". When I was employed, we were required to have stronger password. When we in IT ran an intrusion test, someone was caught using "p@55w0rd". Another one with "!@#$%^&*()" that must be too hard to guess, right? Our server admin exclaimed "lazy!" at his monitor while reading the names.

can I rely on fingerprint security as I travel around.

Yes, but don't fall asleep in public areas. They may steal your fingerprint while you're dozing off. Have a great time on your vacation!

I featured your article on my post for the Pay It Forward Curation Contest. You are welcome to join us.

Thank you, I was thinking of using 'not recognised' as a password but my computer keeps showing it on the screen!

my computer keeps showing it on the screen!

Apparently, computers know if you comply with the password complexity requirement. 😃 This is just one instance when human's creation dominate its creator.

Being "retired" does at least mean I am my own boss (but don't tell my wife.

Indeed, you are now your own boss. Lucky for you!

I so hate the chore of "moving in" when getting a new device. It really is almost like moving house for me.
Glad you got it under control.
I found your post because you were featured by @macoolette in this weeks @pifc curation contest. You should come visit the page. It is a great community of friendly folks you would fit right in.

Ahh.. sometimes I miss my old desktop computer because I need to be at home when I need to work seriously and playing the music with cool loud speaker or playing some games without too many updated for the flash player. But.. laptop is a good choice for those who travelling a lot and still need to keep doing the "work". My best choice is a phablet 😊

Thank you for sharing your story with us @scarletpimpernel. I found your post through @macoolette entry post in the pay it forward contest this week. Just don't create any password like steemit 😉
