Escape to Arizona - Part 2

in travel •  6 years ago

Having lived most of my life in northern states, surrounded by evergreen and deciduous trees, I found it fascinating to visit an area with many varieties of cacti and few trees. It is such an unfriendly landscape: everything is prickly and spiky! I wasn't there long enough to learn the names of all the plants, but I will have a stab at it. (Pun intended.)

Most of the cactus pictures, including this one, were taken along a path that passed behind my sister's house. It wandered behind and between houses and provided a convenient taste of the desert right there in town.

This must be a prickly pear cactus.

If anyone knows the names of the unidentified, pointy, stabby plants in my post , feel free to post that information in the comments.

I am reasonably sure this is a kind of aloe plant, with the red flower.

This one has to be a barrel cactus.

I don't know what this one is, but I like it.

Ocotillo, I believe. Just starting to turn green.

Again, I can't identify this one, but it is an attractive plant. It looks so soft and fuzzy. It isn't.

This may be another variety of aloe plant.

This one is probably a saguaro. I didn't see many like this in town, but I saw plenty of them elsewhere. That will be another post for another day, however.
