General characteristics
The Cueva de los Guácharos Natural National Park is an Andean jungle enclave in the south east of the department of Huila (Colombia) on the western mountain range, one of the last relics of virgin forest in the south of the department. It was the first National Natural Park of Colombia declared with the objective of conserving a group of caves of great geological, flora and fauna value. In them inhabits the guácharo, a nocturnal bird that gave its name to the caves.
This is the bird named Guacharo
Among the most exotic and beautiful attractions of this park are the caves of the Guacharos. Upon entering these geological formations, the deafening noise of the fluttering of thousands of these birds breaks the stillness of the interior of the earth and you can see thousands of birds flying over your head. But the guacharos are not the only inhabitants of these forests, with them an infinity of species of fauna make of this place a sanctuary of biological diversity. Monkeys, rodents, deer, bears, foxes, tigers, tigers and pumas, among many others like the 267 species of birds that cross the skies of the park live here.
