I like to eat here because the food is tasty and cheap, and some of the tables are located in the fresh air. I sit in my regular place under the tree, to which the restaurant owes its name.
When I get a meal, a very elegant, small woman walk passing me.
She is seated at two tables from me and I start to eat.
Suddenly I hear a large man who collects the phlegm, loudly harrumph and spit out the extracted content to the ground.
I think that this is too much.
People are eating here! He could at least stand up and leave those few steps!
I raise my eyes on him to punish him with my gaze.
But I don't see anyone except a lady. However, with the eyes of my imagination, I saw a spitting guy!
So I keep my eyes on an elegant woman and suddenly everything becomes clear!
She was the one who made the whole situation. She was betrayed by the remains of the spit, which she was just spitting out.
The lady wiped her mouth with a tissue and as if nothing happened, came back to browsing the menu.
This was just one of the situations that really surprised me.
That is why I decided to collect for you the strangest behavior of the locals. At the beginning of the journey, they surprised me, and today are already something normal.
I made observations in places where people from Thailand and Malaysia are shopping, relaxing and dining.
Are you wonder how they can surprise you?
So take a look at my subjective ranking!
TOP 5: STRANGE BEHAVIOURS OF LOCALS
- Hawking, spitting and blowing their nose on the street.
I knew the locals would do it, but when I saw an elegant little woman spitting like an old recidivist, I was quite shocked.
Now I understand that. Living in Kuala Lumpur and now in Ipoh, I often see buildings covered with black mold.
You should also add the air conditioning, often with mold included and we have a recipe for problems with the breathing and respiratory system.
Nobody is embarrassed because everyone struggles with the same problems that is why they get rid of the remaining secretions wherever they can and as much as they can.
Yes, these black marks covering entire buildings are mould.
- During the breakfast, a man comes up and talks to me.
His mouth is filled with food that he has just been eating. I move the bowl with lunch away as soon as possible. He doesn't care about anything, and between the sentences, he takes more and more bites to the already full mouth.
I'm helpless when the crumbs mixed with the slobber cover my table more and more densely. When he leaves, I immediately check if any "bonus" has been added to my food. Fortunately, this time he did not "share" anything with me.
Slurping, squelching, burping and talking with full mouth.
The intensity of these behaviors was huge for me and I was surprised that no one except me was bothered by this.
Only a few weeks later I understand that such behavior is actually harmless.
Well, maybe except combining the stuff that came out of the mouth of the stranger with my food. Here I still stand on the guard of my plate!
However, I have to admit something to you. Now, when I eat soup, I start to shyly slurp. Of course, I'm not as skilled as the natives, but before I go to European regions, I can be pretty good at this!
- When I visited the "Big tree" for the first time everyone STARED at me.
After I had ordered chicken and rice, one of the employees sat at the table next to me and watched how I eat.
In another pub, the whole table turned to us and followed each of our moves. They looked like they were watching a wildlife movie with whites in the main roles.
Sometimes they show on us with their fingers, their faces tell us that they are surprised, and sometimes they stumble while looking behind us.
In such situations, I usually smile kindly and wave to the locals. But sometimes I ignore them because while in Thailand locals looked at very subtle and with kindness, here in Malaysia they are very obtrusive.
However, if you are white and want to feel like a celebrity, I recommend you to visit this region!
I guarantee that you will have a big group of "fans".
It's not just the locals who are curious about the white girl.
- Picks! Picks!
They want to take photos with me.
If you talk to the locals, you can be almost sure that sooner or later they will want to take photos with you and put them on Facebook.
Why? The white face in the photo is a trophy and they want to show it to their friends.
Hunting for a white girl with the camera also happens. Sometimes the photos are taken from hiding and sometimes the local paparazzi without a pardon and without warning take them how much they can.
- Sometimes the locals want something more...
They may request for a gift. It is not extortion! But the first time I thought so. Later I understood that they simply wanted to receive a souvenir after meeting a white man.
That is why it is worth preparing a small gift for such a situation.
What is the best? You can read about this in the previous article:
✈ Have no money but want to travel? Check out my secret ways to cut costs by half!
I will tell you one more thing.
Despite all these differences, I simply love these people!
How is this possible?
They are friendly and can quickly make a friendly relation, and thanks to this they have instantly gained my sympathy.
Without a doubt, I will be able to live with them even until the end of my days.
Seriously, in Poland, I have never met with such a family and warm treatment from strangers, but more about this I will write another time.
yummy :) just in the lunch time ;)

I am actually quite ashamed to have you find this embarrassing moment in Malaysia. Growing up in Malaysia, I found it extremely hard to adapt to this kind of situation and often I will do the same as you did. Give them a good stare to make them feel guilty for their irresponsible actions. I am sorry that you have to encounter this situation, but I guess they are the older generation that can't seem to get their bad habit to away from them.
I've read your partner's blog too and I found out that you guys are living in Malaysia now to start up a steemtruck. I guess Ipoh is not the ideal city that you want to live. I guess Malacca would be a better choice in terms of living condition, food, and transportation. Just drop me a dm on Discord if you would like to know more about the city :)

Oh, you don't need to be sorry! Your comment has stolen my heart! 💙
Yes, it is true that this is mostly the behaviour of older people. I am fast adapting so I have no problem with it.
And where exactly did you grow up in Malaysia?
We stayed with my boyfriend in Ipoh, but not permanently. We are now travelling and moving towards Thailand.
I heard about Malacca, but I haven't been there yet. How can I find you on the Discord?
