Crossing the Atlantic on a Super Yacht!

in travel •  7 years ago

Hello Steemit community - this is an adventure I undertook in 2013 working on a Luxurious Super Yacht! From Palma Majorca(Spain) - St Maarten (Caribbean)

My Journey began within a shipyard in Palma Majorca refurbishing a beautiful 53m (173ft) Super yacht, She was not in the best of conditions when I first saw her. Blue tape till the end of the earth and loads of capping rails to be sanded down! 20130919_191507.jpg After about 2 months of work, the endless sanding and little jobs came to an end and it was finally time to drop this baby into the water!20131017_122517.jpg20131017_152802.jpg 20131125_174224.jpgThe adventure across the Atlantic was now only 2 weeks away and I could not wait! The stories of sunsets, the night sky and wild oceans were almost about to become an everlasting experience! First we had to make our way to Gibraltar though which took us 1 night.

Goodbye Palma - What an amazing place.20131127_140945.jpg
Hello Gibraltar! Time fill this girl up with some diesel to cross the Atlantic - all 58000 litres of it! 20131130_081934.jpg

And we are off! Fueled up and ready to rumble across the Atlantic at roughly 7 knots!

My final view of land before going into the deep blue and what a powerful view it was. Quite possibly the most powerful Photo I have taken. 2 Continents, Europe on the left and Africa on the right!20131130_135137.jpg
The Control room also known as the helm. Most of the 14 crew spent their time here.20131201_092744.jpg
Fortunately the oceans were not so wild during our crossing, Some days the water looked like glass. This is a photo from the bow of the boat looking straight at the water . 20131206_154426.jpg

Our daily visitors showing off, sometimes we would see hundreds of them!20131202_165805_10.jpg
A friend decided to hitch a ride, amazing how close she let us get. 20131206_155054.jpg

Land Ho! and Hello St Maarten! Going through that narrow bridge took some serious skill on the captains part! 20131212_113228.jpg
After 13 days we made it across the Atlantic Ocean, this was a cause for celebration! 20131212_153921.jpg
A cocktail and Presidente seems like a fitting end to this story. I hope you all enjoyed reading my first story and if you have any questions please ask!

Nice one! Helps to think of Sint Maarten in happier times. What was the bird which kept you company?

Could not agree with you more @kiligirl , Mother nature is throwing us some mean curve balls :( Unfortunately I do not know the name of the species, here is a better picture of it. 20131206_154313.jpg
Maybe a bird watcher could help us out :)

Thanks for the better picture, and I agree with you, perhaps we should get a seabird expert to check it out for us. I know just the person - @scienceguy, can you identify this bird for us? It was seen on an Atlantic Ocean crossing from Gibraltar to Sint Maarten in the Caribbean, so latitudes quite a bit farther north than you're used to :-).
