In the surroundings of Antequera (MALAGA, Spain) we can find 3 megalithic monuments of prehistory:
- The dolmen of Menga,
- The dolmen of Viera and
- The Tholos of El Romeral
They are funerary constructions that, in addition to being mortuary chambers, in some cases also served as spaces for rituals.
The visit begins at the reception center, where an interesting documentary about the complex construction of the dolmens is projected; You can also find information brochures and souvenirs.
Afterwards, we go to see the dolmen of Menga or the one of Viera, because the two are very close. The dolmen of Menga is the only one in Europe with three pillars.
It is spectacular to see the immense size of the blocks of stones that form it. It is oriented towards the 'Peña de los Enamorados' (the rock of the lovers) that looks like the head of a person lying face up.
It is amazing how in prehistory humans managed to move these stones and build these tombs. When looking at the top of the pillars, you can see how they worked so perfectly to hold the big stones in the ceiling.
Viera's consists of a corridor with a sepulchral chamber at the end of it.
The Tholos de El Romeral is further away, you have to go by car and, although at first the road gets lost because it goes through an industrial estate, it ends up being found. It is a corridor with a circular camera.
Dolmen the Tholos
Looking at it from outside is like a small hill. You enter through a corridor with walls of stones perfectly placed one on top of the other; It does not have much height, which indicates that the people who built them were not very tall.
The archaeological site is located outside of Antequera, where you will find its parking lots next to the visitors center.
Visit the set of Dolmens has no cost!
