Bronze Bell Of Goryeo Dynasty In Naeso-sa Temple

in travel •  6 years ago

One of the fortunate thing in this temple was they preserved the bronze bell made in Goryeo dynasty during the Japanese invasion 1592-1598.

So the bronze bell was the oldest relic in this temple.
All Buddhist bells look like same, but the shape of the bells were said slightly different according to the Dynasties when the bells were made.

I told you several times, I am not a Buddhist and not a specialist about Buddhism art.
It is so sorry I cannot explain the questions of Buddhism.

The building for the bell was so unique in its style.
It was small building, but it had a modest but a elegant beauty.
It had a dignity for protecting this priceless Buddhist Bell.

When you looked at the inside of the building, you could find out all structures of this building was supported in the one point of the center.

The inside structures were made for supporting the weight of the roofs.
The roofs in traditional building were very heavy.
So there needed special structures, those structures were not for the decoration.

The shape of the bell looked like not different from that of Shilla dynasty.
But the specialist told me that the shape between Goryeo and Shilla dynasty was different.
The Goryeo Buddhist bell’s lower part was more narrow than that of Shilla dynasty.
The specialist told me the Goryeo Buddhist bell could make sound longer than others.

Always small difference makes big changes.

On the occasions when the monks and worshippers ring the bell, you can tell that there is some spiritual power coming from the bell's sound. I have never visited or heard this bell ring, but I am told they all sound a little unique because they were handcrafted by experts hundreds of years ago. I am also not a Buddhist, but I find peacefulness in the temples around Korea. They are always built in beautify places where it is easy to enjoy nature and scenery. I hope to go to this temple one day soon, thanks for introducing this bell to me.

Interesting story. I was in a Buddhist temple in Vietnam. There you can make a wish, write it down on a piece of paper, then ring the bell three times with a large log and glue the paper with the wish to the bell. My wish is not fulfilled yet )
