The Marble Pagoda in front of Geuk Lak Bo Jeon Hall of Sin Reuk Sa Temple, Korea

in travel •  6 years ago

It was a rare case to see the pagoda made up of the marble.
Unlike Italia and Greece, the marbles are very rare material in Korea.
The main material in Korea was the granite.

In this temple, It was a great and unexpected thing for me to see the marble pagoda.
As soon as finding out this marble pagoda, I got to there with close.
There were several carvings on the body part of the pagoda, but it was not easy to identify what those carvings tried to show.

Apparently, the problem was the erosion by the wind and the rain.
The marbles were easy to carve, but it must be protected from the wind and the rainfall.
Especially the acid rain in nowadays seemed to make this phenomena worse.

This marble pagoda seemed to me made in late Shilla or early Goryeo dynasty according to the explanation board.
But in my guess, this pagoda would be made in middle or late Goryeo dynasty.

A marble pagoda is certainly rare and unexpected, @slowwalker.

The stone is durable enough to last but not impermeable to erosion.

It makes me think that the vestiges or traces of human history are bound to be characterized by gaps and obscured by the effects of weather - that's what makes the ruins that survive much more precious.

Perhaps our whole chronology of human civilization is flawed by the fact that nothing endures beyond a certain point and we measure our history in thousands of years when it may be much more ancient than we can measure... and that's what stimulates our sense of wonder.

Awesome photography... And... Very very lovely post... I love it.. My cute friend @slowwalker💕💕

It seems the weather plays an important role in the preservating of ancient history, just like that pagoda, it's such a beautiful marble piece, that must be protected from the weather, beautifully taken shots

Hey there Mr Walker! Man, reading the title of this blog post made me feel like I was suddenly fluent in Korean! Haha. Very cool place as always. I love seeing you write about the different dynasties of Korea's past. Amazing how far back the culture and history goes. I find it interesting that they have a stone pagoda and a marble one. I am not sure of the age of the stone one, but, must be not as old. It seemed in better condition.

Acid rain is devastating on architectural features. Our precious history is being erased by it.

May there be a peaceful day ahead.

@slowwalker, Yep it's rarely see marble pagoda in front of Geuk Lak Bo Jeon Hall of Sin Reuk Sa Temple. Very closely pagoda's seems different kind of animals designs. Dragons clearly showing. However thanks for showing various kind of pagoda design to steemians. Great photo shots indeed.

Tried to figure out what was actually carved, the first thing that came in mind - dragon. Obviously it's not possible but I would like to see some of this on ancient stones :)

That would be a serpant of some sort. I'm suprised the authorities don't enclose it in glass or at least put a roof over it. It's definitely rare to see something original like that

Hi. I liked your post, keep it up. I wish you good luck and have a good day, and of course you can also get a big jackpot :)

That is interesting to learn that marble is one of the rare material in Korea, looking at carving, my first impression was that there is a dragon because of the pattern of the back and the claw. It is easy to feel that the person who created Pagoda really enjoyed his work and it must have taken his a long time to complete it. At the end it is a beautiful reminder of Goryeo dynasty time.

Good job.

With your posts we become familiar with pagoda at the temple. the beauty of the carvings and the shape of the pagoda reminded me of various temple buildings in Bali.
carvings on the pagoda marble look like a dragon. This form of beauty must be maintained properly because of the influence of water and the wind will cause erosion. this needs to be done to preserve it. I hope all parties are involved to look after it.
Thank you @slowwalker
Thank you Steemit
