The Scenery and Loneliness of Seong Bool Sa Temple in Snowy Day

in travel •  7 years ago

It was snowy day when I dropped by Seong Bool Sa Temple. This temple was well known because of the song in where sang a lonely silent night of this temple.

It was little bit difficult to climb the mountain due to the snow. I walked up to the temple.
What made me dropped by this temple were it’s carved Buddha statue and it’s scenery about where the song sang.

The scenery was excellent, especially the snow helped to constitute the atmosphere similar to that of the song.
There was not so many people due to the snow. People could not come closer to the temple due to the snow.

It is much better to see that scenery than to explain.

The best place in this temple was Dae Woong Jeon of the main building.
This Dae Woong Jeon was not so large to that of other temple, because this temple was built in the steep slope.

PC310456.JPG

This temple believed to have been built in Koryeo Dynasty, it meant that this temple was built more that 1000 years ago.

May be it was not easy to dropped by this temple long time ago.
What made people build the temple in this deep mountain?

The main object in this temple was the carved Buddha statue and 16 great monks.

It seemed that this statue had been carved 1000 years ago.
The statue was not clear due to the weathering of long time.

(Buddha)

It was not easy to identify Buddha

(16Great Monks)

PC310468.JPG

In the main building, there was no statue in center place.
There was a glass window behind the seat.
It meant that they were serving the carved Buddha statue as the main Buddha statue.

PC310491.JPG

I sat in the main building and enjoyed hearing the sound of small bell of ‘Poong Gyeong’

It’s sound made me comfortable and felt me being healed.

What makes the place great is not a size or a scale but an accumulation of time and feeing.

Thanks for sharing!

Snow adds such a magical element to any landscape. I loved these photos! As someone who has recently been learning composite photography, its pretty simple to mask snow on top of images. That would've been a really nice post processing touch to some of these :) But I know not everyone's super into toiling in Photoshop like I am in. Happy creative trails!

Interesting place. nice photos!

Thanks @slowwalker for sharing these beautiful pics! snow fall makes it even more special...

Yes.
It seems that the snow changes eveything

i like this photos, thanks

a snowy temple lost in time...such a wistful setting for today's post, @slowwalker.

How lovely the buildings look dusted with snow and so lonely and far away.

Temples are usually built on heights and the way to approach them often difficult to navigate - they are meant to be remote and inaccessible and are designed to attract only true seekers.

The Buddha statue, so weathered by the elements as to be almost indistinguishable from rock, is a symbol of the millennium that have passed while this remote sanctuary slept.

The loneliness you felt reminds me of Robert Frost's poem, Desert Places:

They cannot scare me with their empty spaces
Between stars - on stars where no human race is.
I have it in me so much nearer home
To scare myself with my own desert places.

Have a good day, @slowwalker

Thank you so much for your comment

the last line of poem reminds me of my situaltion

I'm glad it touched you, my friend

Great poem...let aside all your comment which I agree

Agree with you , actually, life is really a feeling, if you feel happy, your life is happy, if you feel sad, your life is painful, if you complain, your life will be troubled. Enjoy listening to the sound of the bell just like you . Thanks for your sharing , and your hard work @slowwalker.

What made people build the temple on this deep mountain? - @slowwalker

Funnily, I was asking myself that question just as I saw the first picture, I can imagine that the pictures do the temple no justice, or the mysterious goosebumps and energy you feel when being in such a place.

I remember when I lived in Cape Town and went down to Cape Point, climbed down some rocks and was on the edge, nothing but the blue Atlantic ocean, green and rocks and really high wind.

Here's a picture I captured on that day below:

Looking forward to seeing where you go and what you share next.

I was a climber when I was yonger.

Thank you so muc

Glorious and wonderful scenery!

"What makes the place great is not a size or a scale but an accumulation of time and feeling."
true sir..it is the not the size which makes the temple a sacred place but the good feelings and thoughts of the people in there..and often hard routes lead to beautiful destinations..but most people miss it as they dont want to endure the hardships until the end :)

Thank you so much

calm and zen at the same time.

Yes

I love reading your story 🙂 I'm vote have you please vote I came back 🙂.

;))

Thank you, brotherPlease, sis vote got me.

Lovely shots. I love the dusting of snow over everything. funny - I also posted a temple today :)

yes thank you

This isn’t in Busan, is it? I once visited a temple there that looked so much like this one. It brings back some fun memories.

There was a Cheonan near Dae Jeon in Choongcheong Nam Do

I see. I was in the wrong country. These temples look so much like what I have seen Korea, and you often post about there, so I thought maybe that’s where they were located. When I googled Choongcheong Nam Do, I was brought to China.

Interesting post. Thanks!

It is very hard to identify the statues may be due environmental degradation.I like that you enjoying the song along with the same condition that match with the lyrics .It is very rare to enjoy a song along with same lyrics .You mentioned about the sound of bell that is able to make you comfortable , here i would like to add a sentence that there is a scientific reason behind the bell sound that made you comfortable.

hahaha
It could be

Haha..

Thanks for this really interesting post and great photos. I particularly like the way the buildings are constructed on top of stone pedestals to even out the level of the land. It looks bloody cold though, I hope you wore a big furry hat! :-)

Thank you so much

Yes, the road to the temple was really awesome

Beautiful photography. The temple looks very peaceful with snow. Did you have the place to yourself? There don't even seem to be footprints on the stairs. Nice post!

Thank you so much

Stunning scenery! I have always had a soft spot for Korea, and you've just made it softer. Thank you so much for your photo article!

Thank you for reading

It may have been difficult for you, you still managed to take some great pictures. Thanks

Thank you so much

I think that you really love korea.

Of course, I love Korea and all over the world

Hello Slowwalker, for my eyes it is unusual to see such a buddhist temple with snow :) What made people build the temple in this deep mountain? I think it is the calmness maybe. Like Norwegian people they have their wood holiday cabins deep in the mountains, sometimes you can reach them just by snow mobile cause people want to be alone and enjoy the calmness. Greetings Lena

Enjoying the calmness is a start for self finding

True, beautiful silence and calmness leads to the deep self introspection and inturn it it will help you to know yourself in deep state of level.

Have a great day and stay blessed.

That a quite and peacefull place..

The right place for clearing our mind..

Yes there is right place for our soul

Hands down, you have to be my favorite traveling duo! I can't wait until I'll be able to explore South Korea for myself.

I find it really cool in the eastern Asian countries, you can find such peaceful places in these big bustling cities. I feel that if you've been having a stressful day in the city, you could quite easily have a nice walk around in one of these traditional temples and just de-stress.

Would love to see more pictures....

Thank you so much for your comment

This architecture is so beautiful

nice post

Life is breathtakingly beautiful, so our ancient culture and creations... Now it is for us to share it with rest of the world and protect it with small and personal initiatives like yours... Lives it...🙏🙏🙏

Wow the mountain carvings are some ancient, yet still managed to hold up. Great captures of the contrast behind the snow and the temple.

Its posts like this that make me want to travel around the world enjoing different cultures and learning of their customs. Those temples look amazing with their bright colors!

Yes, you can travel all around the world as you wish

Wow what is this gold and nice vieower

Wow!! So beautiful. How I wish one day I can visit this place.

Photos are breathtaking.
Thank you for the inspiration!

@slowwalker is this Korea or Japan? I've never been to either but the architecture and detail work is so gorgeous to me.

I can imagine the peaceful and healing sound of the ‘Poong Gyeong’ as you've described it. Sounds like a fascinating place to explore.

I really need to get out there. Asia has really been calling me lately.

Thanks so much for sharing @slowwalker! I'd love to hear your thoughts about my recent post: How To Fuel Flirtation And Ignite Irresistible Interactions

this is korea, and Korea and Japan are similar in many aspects.
But in many point there exist many differences

aha! makes sense. thanks for the clarification there @oldstone.

Just so peaceful these temples. I'm very glad to see you enjoy them as well. Some of my favorite days during the korean winters were when it snowed. That didn't happen very often; but when it did it certainly offered a special feeling that I'll always remember. Thank for sharing another lovely post on one of my favorite countries, South Korea. -Dan

Thank you. Dan.

The details on the Buddhas carved into the wall are beautiful for how long they’ve been around, with weathering effects and aging. I appreciate the pictures from inside the temple as well! Regal and peaceful.

Thanks for the wonderful emotions! This snow cover on the roofs of the temples enhances the beauty of your trip!

Good post, you're doing it very well, keep it up

This place look so cold!

Beautiful picks and great vibes! @slowwalker Following and up-voted!

Beautiful pictures i must say. But the buddah statue at the top of the rock isn't all that visible because of the hight i guess, i know you made mention of snow. Thanks for sharing your experience. Great pictures, captivating sight. Well done @slowwalker. Keep the good work!

Not sure, how you think of this I am talking about. In most temples, it is not allowed to photograph the statue of Buddha inside the temple's sanctuary. Do you know? Have you ever thought of it? Or never seen any signs by wall or pillar around sanctum?

I don't mean to offend you, but I hope you'll think about it.
