There is no history having no scars

in travel •  7 years ago

Korea had suffered the rule of the Imperialist Japan for 35 years. Even though they had suffered same difficulties, there existed some differences in antagonistic feeling toward the rule of the Imperialist Japan according to the areas where they had belonged

As I have acknowledged up until now, there was a strong aversion in South West Area of Korean peninsular against the Japanese rule. This did not mean that the antagonism in other area was not so serious. What I want to say is the anti-imperialism of Japan in this region is much more severe than other area.

The reason of negative feeling seemed to be different according to the difference of economic confiscation. South west area in Korean peninsular have been well-known for the agriculture. On the other hands, Japan had suffered lasting lack of food through their history. Besides, the Imperialistic Japan had to supply the provisions of food for the military under the operation in China. During Japan-China war, South West Area of Korea was the supply base of the food

South west area had been confiscated more severely than other area during the Japanese rule. Wherever I have dropped by in Southwest area, I could find the banks built for plundering land and looting grain from koreans.

In this respect, Mokpo was not an exception. Mokpo was first port being opened for trading with other countries. Naturally the first country entering into Mokpo city was Japan.

The first work Japan had done in Mokpo was building the consulate and the bank for Japanese rule.

There were 2 representative architectures built in the period of Japanese rule.
These 2 buildings have been preserved as the Museum of Modern History.

The first museum was a Japanese consulate built before the colonization.
The second museum was a bank for plundering land and grains from Korean.

The former Japanese consulate was located in the bottom of the mountain ‘Yudalsan’.

P1170137.JPG

As entering into the museum, I saw the girl statue of the peace expressing the suffer of young girls suffered the sexual abuse from Japanese Government and Military.

P1170136.JPG

They were kidnapped and forced to be sexual abuse victims for the Japanese Soldiers. When they were kidnapped by the Japanese Government, most of them were teen agers.

Japanese Government never have apologized to that Criminal act. The pain they had suffered was not only theirs but also all Koreans’.

That’s the reason why the girl statue of the peace stood in front of the former Japanese consulate.

The consulate building itself has it’s historical meaning.

P1190883.JPG

P1190889.JPG

There was nothing particular to look at inside of the museum. One interesting was a piano with a candle holder.

P1190886.JPG

P1190887.JPG

The impressive thing near the museum was a tunnel built for escaping from air raid by the U. S air force during the second World War.

The tunnel was a kinds of a scar that koreans had gotten hurt by Imperialist Japan.

P1190890.JPG

P1190891.JPG

P1190893.JPG

It was told that there were so many other tunnels in Mokpo built during the rule of Japan.
I found a tunnel by the road in downtown by chance. The scars were not far from our daily lives.

P1191034.JPG

P1191035.JPG

The bank was the second museum of Modern History.

P1190918.JPG

P1190917.JPG

This building told to have been used for the HQ of military police since the liberation from the Japanese rule.

There is no history having no scars and glories. People is willing to boast their glorious history with pleasure, but trying to conceal their shameful history.

The citizens oh Mokpo didn’t try to hide their shameful history.
I’d like to applause courage.

We hear the side of the Chinese-Japan war but rarely do we get to hear the Korean side. Good article.

History always leave a scar

It was similar to north Korea, you can live a ok life, maybe even a good life if you pledge loyalty to your ruler, but throughout history Koreans have fought to the death for the sake of freedom and culture. Korea even resisted the mongol conquests to keep their independence and culture, during the qing Korea was exempt from wearing the que hair style and kept their culture at great resistance. The Japanese also wanted to erase korean culture and generally people didn't take it sitting down. Thus many people were slaughtered due to not accepting Japanese influence.

I just posted my first blog called,"The Myth." anyone for the next week who follows me and reads THEN comments on my preface, "The Myth" will receive 10 free ELECTRONEUM!

This tunnel is simply attractive and historical. Thanks for sharing this and for enlightening my knowledge !!

Philippines suffered the same fate during their five year rule during the 2nd World War.

Waoooh this is mind blowing... I love your writing skills

Everything happens for the reason I'd like to share my opinion about Korea/America issue? As an American I just hope we can avoid massive loss of life and maintain peace with a China and southeast Asia/Japan. Just hope we work with China primarily and let them at least give us the authority to or they lead an overthrow of North Korea's corrupt dictatorship.
I don't think we are doing anything wrong from Obama's "passive"approach to Trump's more hardline rhetoric, North Korea is going to do whatever in the world Kim needs to do to keep power and his only plays are by keeping 20+ million of "his" people hostage which is largely to keep China in check as they do not want millions of refugees on and crossing their border.
Keeping Seoul under direct threat of artillery fire, which is kinda a "gun-to-the head" hostage situation targeted towards the West/America and to just humanity at large as Seoul is the 4th most populated city in the world and any attack on Seuol would lead immediately to an escalation of war and most likely complete destruction of North Korea's infrastructure and government officials and massive loss of civilian life.
And threatening nuclear war and investing heavily into military and weapon technology. Also the threat of trading nuclear material to terrorists is of major concern for the rest of the world as well. The closer he gets to being a nuclear power the "safer" the North Korean government and also from an economic sense. @slowwalker

Thank you for your interesting opinion.
We need to several positing to talk about North Korean Problem

interesting historical explanation.
I became reminded the history of my own region, Aceh. a province on the top western of the sumatra island, indonesia.

after the proclamation of independence in 1945 through a calm period of development, but then lived in a period of prolonged conflict for 32 years before finally become peace due to the sumatra earthquake and tsunami 2004.

awesome photography

A very beautiful history writing..The tunnel is very interesting indeed...architecture is very impressive..
Thank you for sharing this with us, my friend
I will continue to follow you👏👏 @slowwalker

The architecture of those buildings is very interesting, clearly it is influenced by western architecture, with Romanesque columns and triangular façade but also clearly Japanese, with the rising sun formed in brick. The scars run deep in the North as well, a lot of their literature talks about the suffering they faced at the hands of the Japanese.

thank you for your comment

Thank you for your interesting article full of information we normally don´t get here in the Czech republic so often. I´ve to admit I´m quite stupid concerning far east history. But as there are some important goings on in that region at the moment, and as it´s impossible to understand what´s up without knowing about the history of a region I´m going to learn more about it. And I´m going to follow you right away (upvoting included). Have a good time! Rolf from the Czech republic

Thank you for reading

Very heart touching article.
Japan has suffering the atom bomb attack at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Yes, it was tragedy.
The victims were civilians

I read the your last post about Mokpo and it business of dried fish never had the chance to comment.

Show a place on the planet earth without scar, then an impeding war inevitable. Great history emanating from great Asia country with Mokpo the silver lining scar that connect the history making it beautiful

I am really amazed to see these kind of historical posts which provide us more knowledge about the history of different regions.Japan should have apologized. Whenever i read your post it shows me something which i din't know.Fabulous post.@upvoted

Thank you so much

It is a very impressive article.
Korea can not forget the scars of our nation and should not forget it.
It is also part of our history.
As a Korean, thank you for writing about Korean history.

;))

Some good historical stuff. The sheer horror that those girls in their teens had to go through under imperialist Japan.

Thanks to history, we wouldn't know the crimes committed by Japan.

Thank you for exploring. Always take us along.

Hugs.

;))

Very nice arcitecture.
Btw, I m newcomer.
If you have time please your visit my blog sir
Thanks

The scars of the past are never too far even though people seem all to eager to forget

agreed

very informative and touching article and photos!
the statue of a girl impressed me the most.. even don't know why. It seems to be so simple and emotionless but in fact this laconic posture and clothes tell more than most decoration.

Sexual abuse is a painful topic for all women, and history is full of it during any war actions. The statistics count how many people died but nobody counts how many people are alive but dead inside...

Yes, it was a sad story.
We never forget that crime not to blame Japanese but not to repeat same mistake in our history

It's amazing your journey I envy with you I hope you always succeed I pingin once like you want a good photo and visit a beautiful place

God is very. God

nice post sir thanks for sharing us :)

@upvoted

pride is not the opposite of shame but it's source.
True humility is the only antidote to shame.

When it comes to this time period, Japan can take from this quote.
Though I think it is the fear of shame that keeps them from apologizing because they are afraid to lose face.

sadly refusing to properly apologize or in this case admit that the Japanese government at the time was responsible for these crimes kinda make their current government lose face because they end up coming off insincere and disrespectful. Not admitting a mistake can make it so you won't learn from it and maybe even repeat it. Although I do think their people would not let their government pull off such shenanigans again.

Not sure how the Japanese people themselves view this and whether they are brainwashed by their government about it or not. I never really asked any of my friends who live in Japan.
But I'm pretty sure they won't get all details about this in their history lessons.

Thank you for your comment.
Your comment contains every thing what I want to say.
Yes, History education is very important. People should learn and know the past.
It is a beginning

Ok, this is nice...well written

Great pictures and really great subject to tell... I have heard Japanese had holocaust Koreans for a long time...

Anyway it is really informative article to read... Thank you...

Thank you so much

Nice post and also Great photography 👌👌👌

This was so hard to read. Not from an language aspect, but more of a shocking truth of the world. The statue of the little girl is so moving. You inspired me to write a related post on this subject. I am struggling to find a way to maintain respect and honor for these Halmoni who have endured so much. Can I link to or repost your image in my new blog post? I will link to your great post here and give credit. Thank you again for creating this post. 고맙습니다

good luck

The world in general has been through a lot over the course of the last 100 years. The Japanese/Korean story is only a fraction of events that have shaped modern day living.

I pray all victims of oppression get justice and have a happy ending to their life

Thank you so much

I desire to go to this vicinity. excellent capture

I dont know what to say, as its quite a sad post. So many people suffer from sexual abuse and not much is done about it. Its just disgusting, because the person is left with the horrible memories, which haunt them. Its good you have covered it in your post. People need to learn the past, present and set ways for the future.

i think you are actually right...

There can never be a true history without scars. Infact, history is full of tragedies and misfortune. As Karl Marx puts it, "the history of hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggles.

I was so angry and upset that I was tearing at the movie "I can speak," which was produced last year on an airplane from Incheon to Hanoi. Three years ago I had a few moments helping to prepare a project for Korean 고통의 할머니들 in the United States, and I watched the movie more impressively.

I need to see that movie, thank you

Citizens of Nothern Nigeria- Borno, are experiencing the same thing as the then citizens of Mokpo. The only difference is that the imperialist is a terrorist organization known as Boko haram. They are forcefully taking their belongings, even their daughters and wifes as sex slaves. I believe those people will have a similar story to tell when an end finally comes to Boko haram forceful imperialism.

@tpicric1, you are right to an extent but you can't justify terrorism with colonialism.

Visit my blog and read my recent post.

Hmmm.. They both share one characteristic.. The stronger forcefully preying on the weaker.. Which has a devastating effect on the weaker.

sad story

Very nice post and touching i really liked it way to go @slowwalker

a really interesting story, thank you for sharing with us all @slowwalker

아직 여러번 가봐야 지요

what i remembered after reading this is a poem we had for english literature at school..but now i cant remember the poet..but in that poem it says about the weakness of the way we evaluate the history..we give the credit to the kings or the emperors who for creating big monuments, winning wars..but there the poet asks whether they really deserve that credit? he says that credit should goes to all the warriors who has fought, the masons the plumbers and everyone who has shed their blood and sweat for it

Yes, agreeed

I agree with what you have said.No history is free from scars!!!!! And I like the captures you have shared with us here.I like the way how you have taken some shots

You are traveling to a place that has history, amazing friends, and I really like your story, @sloewwallker success is always a friend.

Great post! Both writing and pictures are very informative and complete. Now I am so curious and will read more about Korea and its history. Also I will read more of your posts. Have you ever travel to Venezuela? I will be posting about it, not as a visitor but as a citicen. Is a different point of view but may be you will be interested. Keep writing!

Wars always leave us scarred. All through history people have been scarred due to the inhumanities they had to pass through when their countries were in such torrid times. The statute is no less a depiction of the inhuman acts which were done to innocent girls. It is a shame really to think about it. I have always had a lot of respect for Japan utterly oblivious of this fact. I dont know if it is a rush decision but your post has shaped and changed my perception about Japan. I am still going to read more about this though. I love history but I suck at writing it but you have left your fingerprint on this one.

Thank you for reading and your comment

That is such a tragedy of our ethnics that we have been ruled by Japanese emprialism for the past three decades during 20th centuries but I am also proud of my ancestors that we haven't been fully colonized and brainwashed how Japanese wanted to at the moment.

We are struggling and fighting with the issue up until now. However, Japan, the subject of colonialism during the period of time, has never admitted the truth of the history. This is truly a tragedy, and even more, they try to feign people and history that they haven't done any faults and bad behavior over the continent.

Germany has revealed different aspect and stance on the issue. They have apologized to victims and admitted the fault during the back days. Eventually, they punished the historical criminal, and put them in jail or sentenced the death penalty to them.

In this issue, one thing we gotta be aware of is that, Germans also have separated the criminal issue from themselves from the Nazis. What I mean is that all the bad things are done by the Nazis but Germans. I think this is the issues. The though came up with when I heard the stories from a friend from Poland. He said that Germans also haven't apologized to the Eastern Europe but Jewish who has had the financial power over the century in the United States.

Anyway, I haven't focused the issue but Japan also has to apologize for the historical fact that they have committed to our ancestors. This will a way to build a full trustship between Korea and Japan.

Thanks for sharing the historical fact and having been made me aware of the issue.

Thank you so much

Thank you for the info about korea and japan, now i have a little knowledge about two countries.

감사합니다,

This is a very high quality post! I will be paying attention to this guy!

A great piece of writing supplmented by apt photographs... It is true that there is no history left without scars.. However, the best we can do at this point is to learn from that history, no matter how painful, and to ensure the wrong doings of history never get repeated. We need historical monuments of this sort to serve as reminders lest we take our well being for granted..

I really wonder why soldiers of the winning side think that they should revile the civilians of the losing side.
