You Could Be Rich in Seoul Only with a Poor Heart

in travel •  7 years ago

Seoul has an old history. There are so many places where I’ve never been, I have lived more than 50 years in Seoul though. 700 years of history is offering for us the plenty of spots to walk around. There are lots of buildings having a historical meaning. Sometimes so much disappearing history made my mind hurt.

Seoul is developing city. New things are appearing day by day. I heard that they rebuilt the highway in front of Seoul Station for cars into for people. The intense argument was undergoing relation to whether it is good or bad. At the end the highway for walking around was decided according to the conception of the Seoul City Mayor.

I could see the highway far away.

There were worried to the traffic jam when the highway was rebuilt for pedestrians. But traffic was normal at that time.

Lots of people are enjoying walking around on the highway. People looked like happy. I could read the feelings in their faces. It seemed that many tourist were walking around and taking the pictures

You could enjoy the sightseeing from the highway.
Nam Dae Moon and Seoul Station are near the highway.

It seemed that open discussion about the constitution was held in the corner. There were lot of camera men. People sitting on the ground were hearing sincerely.

Kids were main guest. They prepared playing instruments. I was happy with seeing kids playing.

There was a place pouring cold steam. A kid got to there closer. He loved cold steam so much and was laughing loudly.

There was corridors or bridges linked with the buildings to rest taking a cup of coffee

Last part of the highway linked to the center of Seoul city.
It was really nice to take a walk and enjoy many places in Seoul without paying money.

Regardless of how much I have, I sincerely could be rich solely with a poor heart.

My uncle was there when US Army staff was stationed there in the 60s. The city looks so artificial to me; I mean no disrespect. I know the people can be wonderful, the food is great, the women lovely. But it has been paved over so many times in 70 years; you would never know to expect if the same building exists 10 years later; maybe like NYC in US.

that's right
Seoul has many faces, so I want to show that
past present and futrue are mixed.
as you said, seoul is changing its shape toward NYC like

Great post :D

sounds like a great place. I hope to visit someday

I have never visited Seoul, but I can relate to your comment, @slowwalker, that "sometimes so much disappearing history made my mind hurt."

As a European, I'm privileged. Many European cities cultivate their cultural heritage. Take Amsterdam, for example: the canals are Unesco World Heritage, and look roughly the same as they did four hundred years ago.

Within the city ring, the height of the buildings is capped. There are skyscrapers in Amsterdam, but only outside the ring.

In Asia, I find there is much less respect for a city's history. Take Bangkok, for example. The Sukhumvit area is full of countless random skyscrapers, with new ones being built every day. One little gem of history still remained though, until recently: Hemingway's, next to Asok BTS station:

Hemingways Bangkok.jpg

Source

This was a restaurant and cafe, very popular with (mostly) expats. It used to be the Embassy of France during the 2nd World War. At that time, there were no skyscrapers at Sukhumvit. Picture this: the ambassador kept horses at the time!

However, you will have noticed I'm speaking in the past tense: the building was sold so some Japanese investor. Who – you guessed – will build yet another skyscraper here.

Breaks my heart a little...💔

thank you for your posting like comment.
As you told, In asia many historical heritages were destroyed.
It is sad story.
There is something more important than money

Agreed!

Very beautiful and thought provoking piece. Thank you!

I really wish I could go there one day. Knowing different culture is an awesome experience! And on your photos I see some architecture I'd love to visit:)

poor in heart? I don't think so, @slowwalker. Your wealth is your soul and you have a heart for people that is overflowing.

Could you be satisfied with life if you were poor? I think so. You gain so much joy out of walking around and being among people. The best things in life are truly free.

You are developing a theme through your writing about tradition and the past giving away to the new. You see it all around you in Seoul City. I personally love the pedestrian walkways and bridges and tunnels to nearby buildings. Street life is vital to a city, not just a village.

Your photos were particularly good today as well.

An excellent post, Friend!

thank you for your comment
Your comment gave me strength to continue the posting

I'm glad, @slowwalker

And yet Seoul is the 6th most expensive city in the world
according to CNBC, which is interesting:
http://www.cnbc.com/2017/04/11/the-10-most-expensive-countries-in-the-world-.html

That's right.
Seoul is one of the most expensive city in the world.
But traffic fee is a cheapest , if you eat like korean, food is also reasonable

A very interesting post indeed.

Seoul seems like a beautiful city from the stuff I've seen online. I didn't know it was so close to North Korea, crazy!

I sure would like to go and have some Korean BBQ :) Which restaurants do you recommend?

too much places. haha

Which one's the absolute best? And which one gives you the best bang for your buck?

Good post :D

This seems to be an interesting post but the broken English makes it difficult to read.

Did you use a translation app like Google translate?

Maybe the posts would earn more money if they were rewritten in proper English.

How about I rewrite your posts for you in proper English?

haha
I know my english is broken.
but I think you could understand me.
That's OK
I will improve my english with this posting

Somehow your English has improved in your reply above.

It is as if you were using broken English intentionally?

Seoul... i miss the food and convenience of everything being close. I don't miss the dirty air and traffic though. I can tell by the pics there was smog and no blue skies. Thank you China for eliminating our blue skies.

hahaha

I have very fond memories of Seoul. My father worked at the American embassy and I lived in the army base Yungsan for 2.5 years in 01-04.

The culture was way less of a shock to my 12 year old brain than I thought it would be. Korean culture breeded a pretty friendly city Especially for how big it was.

That and all the older Korean girls fuckin loved my fair skin blue eyed Irish ass. It was a good few years for my love life.

Your hair and blue eyes might be amazing for those girls.
I understand.

blush

seoul is such a modern city, I didn't know they have a history of 700 years old. wow. thanks for sharing.

:)

Seoul is a great city, hopefully can visit that amazing city one day..!!

I always see Seoul as being an ultra consumerist city. I'm always interested in seeing another side of it, like the old parts of town and the book stores you shared before

I wll post the old parts of city.

Great ancient city with great people. He already had a status of the capital of one of the ancient Korean kingdoms before our era.
Enjoyed reading a lot!)

thanks for sharing !

Seoul has wonderful architecture. I've never see cold steam, very interesting

Travelling to Seoul has always been part of the bucketlist. I've always been enticed by the perfect mix of old and modern culture that I always see on tv or social media. Eventhough Seoul is popular in mainstream media, I think there are still a lot more secrets to the city that are waiting to be discovered. That is why it's so nice to see Seoul through the eyes of the locals like you. I hope someday soon I'll be able to also experience Seoul authentically. Maybe next year :)

Ohhh! We would need so much those cold steam stations at work especially during this hot summer.

Very nice post! Thanks for sharing!

I'd love to visit Seoul one day, probably next year ;)

Awesome pictures brother! I am enjoying your content like usual :) And hey, I also just posted my latest post :) Awesome!
